Slub, Slubby, Slubbiness – Huh?
Admittedly, talking about “slubbiness” of denim is not usually the most exciting aspect of raw denim. In fact, most people wouldn’t bother to even notice this characteristic. However, “slubbiness” plays as big of a role as the weight and fit of denim do. Some labels even goes as far as to pride themselves on the their “slubbiness”.
According to thefreedictionary.com, “slub” in the textile industry is “a soft thick nub in yarn that is either an imperfection or purposely set for a desired effect“. In terms of raw denim, it is when the denim manufacturer accidentally or intentionally causes irregularities in the yarn by means of knotting or twisting or using a mixture of different fiber lengths. The effect is an uneven, bumpy, hairy, and rough texture; making for even raw-er denim (although many denim heads prefer the smoother and flatter alternative).
Moreover, a couple denim lines that are known for their slubby threads are Pure Blue Japan and Oni. Check out the shots below and make note of the bumpy and irregular texture.
