To say the man behind the namesake Simon James Cathcart is passionate about his brand is an understatement. The Brit has always been passionate about the fringe of fashion, specifically those who can truly identify with the origins of workwear. The principles of S.J.C. come from many parts of Cathcart’s life, but the most signifying were the frequent visits as a child to his grandfather’s steel factory. Welders wore leather aprons, foremen wore twill shirts and pants, painters wore overalls, and truck drivers in hardy jackets and pants. Everything served a purpose.
It’s this throwback to functionality that highlights the Simon James Cathcart 18 Oz. Bilt Tough Dungaree Denim. These vintage-style jeans recall the prison work pants of the 1940’s, as well as World War II commissioned denim. The fabric is a densely woven 18 Oz. Japanese denim that has been washed once to reduce shrinkage, with the weight indicating that these (probably) shouldn’t be worn in the heat of summer.
Fit-wise, the jeans feature a long curved outer seam to showcase the loose-legged fit of the period (which would now be termed an anti-fit). Rear darts pull the cut up into the lower back, slimming the waistline. Black steel doughnut buttons line the fly along with scalloped shell stitching that’s representative of the period. The large patch pockets are double-lined in sailcloth, both for warmth and softness. Other details include poly-cotton stitching for durability, felled seams throughout, reinforced belt loops, and a diamond crotch piece.
These jeans definitely harken back to the dungarees of the first half of the 20th century, and for that reason won’t be for everyone. However, the dedication on Cathcart’s part is obvious–the man appreciates how men dressed during that time, and believes they are worthy of celebrating.
