Long Sleeved Popover Shirts – Five Plus One

Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.

Popover shirts are classic pieces of Americana prep wear, and with the weather heating up they are an excellent addition to any wardrobe. A popover typically a woven collared shirt but the placket stops a ways before the hem, so you have to “pop” one “over” your head to put it on.

Whether you pair them with shorts, white linen pants, chinos, or jeans, they will give any outfit that little bit of extra pop (no pun intended).

1) GANT Rugger: Ikat Popover Shirt in Indigo

Gant Rugger’s interpretation of a classic popover is wonderful — it uses the Ikat dyeing method, which requires yarns to be dyed prior to them being woven into fabric. This method creates slightly warped patterns, as it is incredibly difficult to perfectly align pre-dyed yarns. This popover features slightly fewer buttons than most, but remains a wonderful piece of Americana [that just happens to be made in China -Ed].

Available for $115 from End Clothing.

2) Alex Mill: Ticking Stripe Cape Shirt in Navy

Alex Mill’s Ticking Strip Cape Shirt is an incredibly straightforward popover, but that’s why we like it so much. It features a quarter-buttoned front, horizontal stripes, a pattern-matched chest pocket, and an understated collar. Nothing about it truly stands out, but that’s exactly the point of such a simplistic piece.

Available for $175 from Gentry NYC.

3) Bedwin: “Krall” L/S Military Pullover Shirt

Bedwin’s Krall Pullover Shirt is a bit different from many other popovers, as it is based on classic military designs. Rather than having a true collar this shirt’s placket wraps around the neckline, similarly to many types of jerseys. This construction details, combined with the shirt’s longer than average length, really sets it apart from other popover shirts on the market.

Available for $252 from Haven Shop.

4) Gitman Brothers Vintage: L/S White Banded Popover

If I were to only own shirts from one company, it would be Gitman Brothers Vintage. Their styles are impeccable and the Long Sleeved White Popover is no different. It is constructed from a simple, white oxford cloth and features a banded collar — if you are planning to own only a single popover, this one would make a fantastic choice.

Available for $165 from Need Supply.

5) Omnigod: Linen/Cotton Indigo P/O Long Shirt

Omnigod is known for their unique styles and fantastic materials, two attributes that are certainly present on the Indigo Popover. It’s constructed from a cotton/linen fabric, which goes wonderfully with the indigo color and textural vertical stripes.

Available for $228 from Blue Button Shop.

Plus One – 8.15 August Fifteenth: Flower Baja Pullover in Indigo

8.15 August Fifteenth’s Flower Baja Pullover is a very unique piece. Beyond the interesting texture and pattern of this shirt, the closure method features eyelets and a lace rather than buttons. It’s a perfect piece for layering or on its own, and is just unique enough to make any outfit pop. Don’t sleep on this on, folks — it won’t be around for long.

Available for $219 from Unionmade Goods.
