Battenwear Made in USA Batten-Down Vest

One of the few pieces of my father’s mountaineering equipment that didn’t hit the donation bin a decade ago is a green down vest. This vest is an OG North Face from 1976, back when the company had only one care tag: “For down coats and sleeping bags”. It has these amazing triangular bartacks, branded snap buttons, an elastic waist, and two patch pockets. I wouldn’t give it up for the world.

However, if I didn’t have that vest, I would want this one from New York’s Battenwear. Battenwear has an obsession with sport and recreation wear from the 70s and 80s and the soul of that North Face piece lives on in their Batten-Down vest. It has a 50/50 nylon/cotton shell so it’s wind and water resistant, a 670 fill power down/feather blend, and one more pocket than mine.

Live vicariously for $470 at Armitage & McMillan.
