Heddels explains Overall

Initially called “slops”, overalls were first created in the 1700s for working men and considered to be lower class. They were originally made out of a tough cloth instead of denim, and were worn over another pair of pants.

In the 1850s, the color of overalls began to denote one’s profession, with white being for painters, blue for farmers, and pinstriped for railroad workers. They became popular with women in the 1950’s with Rosie the Riveter, a symbol representing the wartime working woman.

Overalls are also sometimes called dungarees.
