Sanding (also Emersing)

What does Sanding (also Emersing) mean?

A finishing process on denim where the denim is sanded to give a smoother feel.

Heddels explains Sanding (also Emersing)

Sanding is a finishing process used on denim to soften it and give it a worn look. It can be done by hand with sandpaper or using commercial sanding tools such as a sandblaster. The final effect can be quite subtle or very extreme, depending on the length of the sanding process. Jeans that have been sanded tend to emphasize the body’s curves.
