Heddels explains Textile Finishing

While there are many different processes used to finish fabric, the most common ones used on denim include singeing, scouring, bleaching, desizing, mercerizing, sanforizing, and bio-polishing, each designed to accomplish a specific goal. For example, scouring removes foreign particles and helps a fabric to take dye better, while sanforizing prevents a garment from shrinking after washing. In general, raw denim jeans do not undergo any of the finishing processes.
