Regardless of one’s experience with raw denim, most would agree that they love everything about the material – its industrial simplicity, its rigid and crisp finish, and in most cases, its thick and slubby feel. However, the one bone of contention most seem to have is when the weather and climate heats up. What we mean is that as soon as summer and the accompanying heat arrive, throwing on raw denim is the last thing on people’s minds.
Even within the twitterverse, you will regularly spot some venting tweets (see below – hope you don’t mind, @the_peddler) about just how unbearable it is to wear raw denim around this time of the year. Fret no more though, denim heads. If you are in need of an alternative for this summer, look no further than the RK Denim – a wonderful collaboration piece produced by Karl Thoennessen (of Rogue Territory) and style influential, Ryan Plett.
Thankfully, Karl was nice enough to give us some background information leading up to production of the RK Denim (big thanks again). As the story goes, this exclusive collaborative piece dates back to 2009 when Rogue Territory introduced the double indigo work trousers. Soon after, Karl and Ryan began tossing around ideas on teaming together and potentially producing something unique.
Sure enough, over the course of 2011 the duo utilized fits of several existing Rogue Territory products and began designing a pattern from scratch. What resulted were three prototypes that were progressively lighter in denim weight; with the frontrunner being simply exceptional – a slim fitting, 6 Oz. sanforized Japanese Denim (Kaihara Mills).
We asked Karl why he chose to go the Japanese Denim from Kaihara Mills route. His response:
[Kaihara Mills] are one of the largest and most high tech mills. Not only are they known as being the most consistent throughout the runs of denim they produce, but they also produce some great more vintage style denim; which is the stuff that I’m drawn to. They are master denim makers and use only the highest quality cotton.
Ideal for the summer heat but still wearable by day and night, the RK Denim marks the first limited denim collaboration for both sides.
