Introducing OUTCLASS – Contemporary Raw Denim
When most think of raw denim, the first image that comes to mind is likely a starched, heavy denim that is of a deep indigo color. They wouldn’t be at fault either – raw denim is considered a timeless and minimalist article in which the beauty is found within the pureness and finest of details.
Regardless of where the denim manufacturer may hail from, many succeed in producing a denim that fits this stiff, indigo-color criteria, yet finds a way to set themselves apart.
That is another story though. Despite the classics will always have their place, in recent years we have seen the emergence of bold, innovative pieces from the likes of labels such as Naked & Famous, Sugar Cane & Co., and Rogue Territory. Just when we all thought there was little room left outside-the-box, another player has come forth and is poised to stay.
Just two months shy of its two-year anniversary, Canada-based OUTCLASS was founded in September 2009 by designer, Matteo Sgaramella. The brand has proven to find an interesting niche in not just the world of mens garments, but also in the realm of raw denim.
OUTCLASS‘ inspiration is sought in historical garments and design practices, but went it comes time for construction, contemporary adjustments and durability are considered paramount. Truly ideal for both young and old men looking for minimalist, conservative, yet eye-catching wear.
For the Spring/Summer 2011 collection, Sgaramella was sure to include a unique raw denim that is unlike any other – the Concrete Grey Denim. Regarding the denim, he was kind enough to give us the full scoop. To our surprise, the 11 Oz. 100% cotton was specifically sourced from The Czech Republic, but he swears by the quality.
He explained as well that though one will still experience the standard sturdy construction that softens over time, there is no fade progression since the denim weave is the same on both sides. We would add that this is likely due to the denim being grey, and not a rope-dyed, deep indigo.
Don’t be deceived by its soft appearance either. As this is raw denim here, you can bet it is durable and built to last. The jeans were manufactured in the same Toronto-based factory that produce life-time guaranteed brands such as outdoor-hat label, Tiley Endurables.
As for the details, be sure to take note of areas such as the second coin pocket, four contrast-stitch extended bartacks on the back pockets and Italian shirt cotton lining at the cuff, back yoke, and pocketing (!). Did I mention each pair are hand-made, specially numbered, and only 20 are available? Quality over quantity, indeed.
