Union Special. A legendary name that lives in the hearts and minds of denim-geeks and vintage enthusiasts everywhere. Well, not exactly, but its still a big deal.
You might recall from our article on chain-stitching that it requires a particular type of machine to sew a chain-stitch. There are many sewing machines that can chain-stitch but as any serious denim head will tell you, everyone wants their jeans hemmed by a Union Special; particularly the 43200G model. With such high demand for the machines, they tend to fetch a pretty penny (around $5,000) even in less-than-great condition.
That’s why the denim community’s collective jaw hit the floor a few weeks back when Self Edge San Francisco announced that it had managed to acquire a Union Special 43200G in perfect condition; that is to say the machine has never been used. We’re not certain how or where they came across this gem, but it’s essentially the denim-geek version of finding a Pharaoh’s Tomb. Needless to say, we’re all pretty jealous.
If you’d like to have your jeans hemmed by this gorgeous machine, it will be installed at Self Edge’s San Francisco location for hemming and repair purposes. Oh, and we’re still jealous…
