With the vintage revival in the last few years, many brands have been adjusting their products to incorporate aspects of workwear and styles of past times. Many products described in terms like “vintage-inspired” feel far less than genuine, and yet few people are willing to wear
and pay for 100% authentic replicas of vintage items produced by Buzz Rickson’s or The Real McCoys.
Luckily, we have brands like Stevenson Overall Co., who are dedicated to walking the fine line between authenticity and modern styles (with a heavy lean towards authenticity). Starting with vintage workwear, military and outdoor clothing as a template, SOC takes the highlights of the original items and recreates them using the best materials available today, and sometimes using deadstock materials.
SOC’s product line-up includes a wide variety of articles, including a variety of trousers, shirts, jackets and accessories. Our favourite part, of course, is their jeans selection which features a staggering 10 different cuts. From a brand that doesn’t focus mostly on denim, that number is unheard of.
Today, for example’s sake, we’re covering the Santa Rosa 767 jean, a straight-leg cut with a very slight taper. Crafted from an original 14 oz. Kuroki Mills selvedge denim, the jeans are sewn together with a poly-cotton thread, meaning the construction will be stronger and more resistant to general wear & tear, despite being sewn together using single-stitching (chosen in favour of authenticity).
Perhaps our favourite part of Stevenson Overall Co.’s jeans, though, is their lines. Looking at the pockets, belt-loops and fly, they all feature curved edges. Most noticeable on the rear and coin pocket, even the front pockets swoop downward, instead of meeting the outseam at a 90-degree angle. The belt-loops are flared at both ends and even the fly is flared at the top, instead of running parallel to the edge of the jean.
We quite like the attention to detail Stevenson Overall Co. has put into their jeans, though as SOC admits on their own website that they’re not for everyone. In all honesty, most people won’t notice these details when you’re wearing them, but that’s beside the point. If you’re looking for a pair of jeans that are crafted from quality materials, sewn together well and have the perfect mix of flair and authenticity, check out Stevenson Overall Co.
