I was a bike rider, a photographer and a history student, probably in that order.
– Danny Lyon
Danny Lyon‘s 1968 photo-documentary, The Bikeriders, is one of the most essential pieces of modern photojournalism documenting the Chicago Outlaw Motorcycle Club.
Emerging in New York City this coming weekend at the Pop Up Flea V, Levi’s Vintage Clothing will be presenting a special exhibit entitled, “The Biker with Oil and Leather and The Bikeriders”. Inspired by Danny Lyon’s publication, LVC has teamed up with 12 global artists and illustrators to customize 21 blank black leather motorcycle jackets with oil paints.
The tradition of hand-painted motorcycle jackets is given an interesting spin from Levi’s and will be shown as an exhibition around the world alongside the Lyon images.
This unique exhibition shows off not only the jackets and photos but also rare photographs, outtakes and letters will be available for public viewing. They will then be making their way to Toyko where the jackets will be auctioned off at the Levi’s store in Shinjuku starting on December 7th.
