Though it comes to no surprise for some, indigo dyeing isn’t just for denim jeans and is often utilized in sweatshirts. Interestingly enough, much like with your favorite pair of raw denim, the indigo dyeing creates a unique fade pattern with time and wear, though of course it will also rub off a bit onto anything white in the first couple weeks of wear.
If they aren’t once-washed on purchase, you may wish to consider giving the shirt a once-through in the washing machine on cold to lock down the dye. Though this will diminish the fading slightly, it will also prevent the dye from running onto any light coloured fabric you may contact.
