Capsule 2013 Tradeshow – A Brief Roundup
This January 15th and 16th, Berlin hosted Capsule, an increasingly important fashion and lifestyle trade show. This event was created in 2007 and since then has grown to the point where it now takes place 12 times a year in what are considered by many to be the 4 most fashionable cities in the world, New York, Berlin, Paris and Las Vegas.
The exhibitors at this trade show event are a blend of high-end brands and independent designers from around the world, presenting their latest collections targeted to the young and trendy. The January 2013 edition had a few premium denim brands as exhibitors and we visited the booths of the Canadian Naked & Famous, Belgian Eat Dust, and Swedish Denim Demon.
Naked & Famous was, as always, presenting innovative products. Brandon Svarc, the crazy mind behind N&F, introduced us to his newest nutty idea, the Thermocromatic jeans. This is a denim that change of color with heat!
We gave them a try and what Brandon says is true, it changes color. Also included in the 2013 collection was the Okayama Spirit, a 16oz. super slubby denim that remind us the mythical Samurai Texas Cotton. According to N&F‘s Bahzad Trinos, it is the same Japanese mill that produces the denim for both brands.
Another new surprise was the Rainbow Core, a denim that will give a multicolor fade pattern. Of course was there also the heaviest denim ever made, the 32oz. This monster denim was available to touch and was displayed free-standing.
The Belgian brand Eat Dust, with their two owners Rob and Keith, encompass the freedom and passion of motorcycle riding. You can see that passion projected onto their denim collections.
They will introduce a great garment selection in 2013 that includes a beautiful lammy denim jacket, a matching lammy vest, a real motorcycle focused boot cut jean, a sheep leather vest and a combo jacket vest with ethnic patterns that remind us of North American indian motifs. Between the two owners, there are more than 25 years of work and design experience in the denim industry going into each piece. This includes time spent working and collaborating with large international brands like Levi’s, Lee and G-Star.
Alongside their clothing releases, Eat Dust released a capsule collection of leather goods designed for and by motorcycle lovers. The collection tilts its cap to its motorbiking heritage with really thick leathers combined with heavy duty hardware.
Denim Demon was also presenting two new denim cuts with two different fabrics, both a 13.5 oz. Japanese selvedge. The Nordic brand also released a denim jacket with interesting details pointing to their heritage. They will likely be a brand to watch in future.
As Capsule constantly changes of city, there will always be different denim brands exposing their new collections and showcasing the best of their wares. We’re excited to see what was shown off in Paris and what New York will bring.
