Fade Friday – Nudie Thin Finn Dry Twill (5 years, 3 washes)

This week’s Fade Friday features an insane pair of Nudie Thin Finns from Mitchell Fong. Nudie is famous for holding fast to the idea that denim should be worn until its absolute death. They have even gone beyond this ethos by taking old denim and giving them new life by repurposing and recycling them into new jeans.

Mitchell originally purchased his Thin Finns in September 2009 and since has had countless repairs with only 3 washes. He wore them almost everyday for the first 2 years and he says that during that time, the “hardest part was getting my mom to not wash them…” They key is patience, he says. His pair shows off some impressively light shades with well-earned rips and tears to the thigh, crotch, knees, and rear. You can even see that the yoke was ripped away from the seat at one point. There’s also a blood stain on the thigh from boxing in his basement.

That’s not all, Mitchell’s Thin Finns are actually award winning. He entered his jeans in an Instagram contest that won him two tickets to the Sled Island Music Festival in Calgary. One might expect a pair this old with only 3 washes to have some really high-contrast fades, but because Mitchell has worn them for so long, the natural fading process has overtaken much of the whiskering. The sharpest contrasts are actually from the patched areas. This pair has obviously been through hell and continues to live on with a little lot of TLC.
