Twilled & Co. – Introducing Korea’s Heritage Denim

South Korea has had a relatively low profile when it comes to raw denim but with the popularity of raw denim growing as fast as it is, it’s no surprise that we’re starting to see more brands emerging from other countries that have kept fairly silent.

Enter Twilled & Co., a Seoul-based brand started by the guys behind one of the few Korean denim stores, Brick Seoul.

Howard Lee started Brick Seoul a year ago to bring in raw denim to Korea and within that year, he saw a ton of interest and excitement surrounding the many Japanese and American brands but he felt that Korea did not have enough representation.

Wanting to add the Korean voice to the conversation, he got together with his childhood friend Sam Yoon and created Twilled & Co.

The decidedly heritage inspired brand channels a classic Americana feel with its patch design, construction, and jean models which are reminiscent of many of the bigger brands like Warehouse, The Flat Head, and The Real McCoys.

8201xx and 8202xx

The current offerings keep it simple: the 8201xx Classic Slim and 8202xx Classic Straight. Both jeans (which are offered both raw and one-wash) are made from a sanforized, pure indigo rope dyed selvedge denim from Collect Mills. It’s made from ring spun Memphis cotton yarns and weighs in at 13.25 oz.

The denim is also sanforized, but the fabric has not had the hairs singed off so there is a soft hand and smooth texture. The details are subtle but noticeable with its herringbone tab, goatskin patch, hidden selvedge on the fly and coin pocket, and a hidden hanger loop under the back belt loop.

This classic aesthetic is fairly standard for those familiar with many Japanese brands. The design and fabric choices Howard and Sam made in this first run of jeans, however, shows that they’ve been paying close attention and that there will be much to look forward to with future runs.

With the positive response to their jeans, the focus has shifted completely from Brick Seoul to Twilled & Co. (they closed the doors to Brick Seoul last month) and they’re now in the midst of building out their webstore.
