Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.
Duffle coats have been around for well over a hundred years, and they’re not going anywhere soon. While the definition of a duffle coat is pretty broad they generally share several characteristics: mid-length, hooded with a flapped front closure, a wool body, and several toggles attached with cord as a means of frontal closure. With such a generic formula you’ll surely be able to find a toggle coat that fits your personal style and needs.
1) Kapital: Kendo Canvas Duffle Short Coat in Charcoal
Kapital is always producing unique pieces and their Kendo Canvas Duffle Short Coat is no different. It is cut from a dark charcoal material, but with lighter grey accents on the shoulders, flapper front pockets, and chest pocket. It features a hood with a double-snap closure to keep you well bundled against the elements, and the classic rope/toggle closure that you’d expect on a duffle coat.
Available for $850 from Unionmade Goods.
2) Schott: Satin Lined Duffle Coat in Grey
Schott might be known for their leather jackets, but that doesn’t mean their Satin Lined Duffle Coat is any less great. While many brands are producing shorter duffle coats these days, Schott has stuck with the classic longer variety. That, plus the fact that this coat is made from 24oz. wool blend, make it a perfect option for cold weather. It features classes talon toggles that are attached with leather cords, and secured with leather accents.
Available for $225 from Schott.
3) The Kooples: Black Duffle Coat With Leather Accents
The Kooples‘ take on a Duffle Coat is a bit more modern than most, and the result is a sleek coat that is easy to dress up or down. It features a zippered front closure along with the three toggles that are attached with a grey webbing. The body of the jacket is made from a 75%/20%/5% wool/polyamide/cashmere blend with leather accents and a smooth inner lining.
Available for $435 from The Kooples.
4) Yigal Azrouel: Duffle Coat
Yigal Azrouel is mainly known for his line of women’s clothing, but his men’s jackets are just as nice. His interpretation of a Duffle Coat is made from a wool fabric blend and plaid cotton lining, but that’s not the main thing that makes this jacket that stands out. In the event that you don’t want to wear the hood it unzips to flatten down, making this duffle coat one of the more versatile ones on the market.
Available for $1125 from Yigal Azrouel.
5) Gloverall: Mid Length Duffle Coat
Gloverall has been producing their Duffle Coats out of England since the 1950’s, and that history shows in the quality of their products. This version is their mid length duffle coat, made from 100% wool and designed to be the perfect winter companion. It features the classic talon shaped toggles, large patch front pockets, reinforced shoulder and back yoke, and button closure hood flap that you’d expect (and want) to see on a duffle coat.
Available for £281 from Gloverall.
Plus One – Original Montgomery: Mayfair Knitted Duffle Coat
Original Montgomery is another brand that has been producing duffle coats out of the UK for many years now. While they produce many run-of-the-mill duffle coats their Mayfair Knitted version is quite different and special. The outer is made from a knitted wool/nylon fabric blend, which go very well with natural wood toggles and rope accents used to attach them. It comes in a large range of colors, including indigo, so there is something a little bit different for everyone (and at a very palatable price).
Available for $125 from Original Montgomery.
