Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.
Everyone should have a selection of oxford cloth button downs in their closet. They’re simple, can be dressed up or down, and the fabric’s texture adds a little bit of interest to any outfit. OCBD’s are a staple so your choices are just about endless. While this list aims to offer a wide range of what is currently available it is far from comprehensive; if you don’t see anything that is perfect for you then take a look around—there’s no need to settle on such a popular item.
1) Brooks Brothers: Solid Oxford Polo Button Down
Brooks Brothers’ Red Fleece Collection offers classic, preppy pieces at an affordable price, and their Solid Oxford Polo Button Down exemplifies the collection perfectly. Available in a wide range of sizes and just about every color you could possibly want, these Supima cotton OCBD’s offer a slim fit without being overly tight throughout the body.
Available for $50 from Brooks Brothers.
2) Save Khaki: Button Down Collar Oxford Shirt
Save Khaki’s Button Down Collar Oxford Shirt is a made-in-the-USA, garment-dyed OCBD available in thirteen different colors. The fit is a bit boxier than the average shirt these days and it’s got a large front pocket and back box pleat. While this shirt can certainly be dressed up, the shorter body length and simple curved hem make it perfect to wear untucked as well. And, made out of 100% cotton, this preshrunk shirt will quickly become your favorite and most comfortable shirt.
Available for $170 from Save Khaki.
3) Uniqlo: Easy Care Stretch Oxford
Uniqlo’s Easy Care Stretch Oxford might not be available in as many colors as some of the others shirts on this list, but all the most popular hues are still represented. They are constructed from a 96%/4% cotton/spandex blend that give the comfort and breathability of cotton with the durability and stretch of synthetic materials. These shirts are designed to remain wrinkle free even after washing, making them a great choice for travel or when you’re running late in the morning.
Available for $30 from Uniqlo.
4) Gitman Vintage: Classic Oxford
Everyone knows about Gitman Vintage’s quality shirting, so it should come as no surprise that they make one of the most compelling OCBD’s on the market. Made in the USA from 100% cotton fabric, this shirt is a great choice for those who want a quality shirt and don’t mind spending some serious coin it. Constructed in a slim fit with a box pleat, locker loop, and full placket, no details were overlooked when designing this shirt, and the quality shows the moment you put it on.
5) Outlier: Nyco Oxford
Outlier is known for their high-end techwear clothing, but that doesn’t mean a traditional OCBD is outside of their wheelhouse. Their Nyco Oxford might look like every other OCBD on the market, but the secret is in the fabric: a cotton weft and nylon warp oxford cloth with a Zelan R3 water-resistant finish. While tech fabric shirts might not appeal to everyone, the comfort and durability they offer make a compelling argument for techwear nuts and business casual dressers alike.
Available for $98 from Outlier.
Plus One – Norse Projects: Hans Collarless Ripstop Oxford
Outlier isn’t the only brand making tech-wear inspired OCBD’s, and Norse Projects’ Hans Collarless Ripstop Oxford is arguably an even more interesting piece. Constructed from 100% cotton ripstop, this banded collar oxford shirt is truly one of a kind. It features a classic fit with midsized front pocket, mother of pearl buttons, and the great construction you’d expect from a European-made garment. While the banded collar makes this piece a bit harder to dress up, it is certainly a solid option for anyone wanting to wear their OCBD’s casually.
Available for $160 from Norse Projects.
