Freewheelers Takes on the Levi’s 501Z for Their Latest Repro Jean

We don’t see nearly enough Freewheelers on Heddels as we’d like. While plenty of brands are out there getting zany with their denim design, Freewheelers seems really dedicated to reproducing and improving many of our favorite vintage pieces.

Freewheelers has taken on a particularly notorious piece for their newest collection. Their new jean, the 661ZXX, tackles one of the most incendiary famous of Levi’s models, the 501ZXX, the first pair of Levi’s to feature a zipper. Released for the first time in the mid-50s, the zip-fly Levi model caused all sorts of trouble: alienating old customers and confusing new ones. Though that original release didn’t receive the warmest reception, we’ve now come to appreciate this design. Freewheelers has enhanced the texture of the original, using a one-wash 14oz. selvedge denim with slightly more texture than the reference design. Its mid-high rise and relaxed taper feel stay true to the styles of the 1950s and a Gripper Zipper and copper rivets round out the authentic feel.
