Kimono Inspired Outerwear – Five Plus One

Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.

Kimono inspired coats and jackets are all the rage lately, and it makes perfect sense. Appreciation for Japanese fabrics, craftsmanship, and style have been part of denimhead culture, and kimonos were a clear next step. Haori, Hanten, and Noragi style jackets are just some of the inspiration for the jackets on this list, and while these jackets might not be for everyone it is impossible to deny the beauty of these garments.

1) FDMTL: Long Haori Jacket

First up is FDMTL’s Long Haori Jacket—a long-cut, made in Japan jacket constructed from indigo dyed sashiko fabric. This piece features two front, patchwork pockets, tonal stitching, and wide side slits that complete the piece’s aesthetic. Without so much as a tie closure, this jacket makes an excellent layering piece.
