Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.
Kimono inspired coats and jackets are all the rage lately, and it makes perfect sense. Appreciation for Japanese fabrics, craftsmanship, and style have been part of denimhead culture, and kimonos were a clear next step. Haori, Hanten, and Noragi style jackets are just some of the inspiration for the jackets on this list, and while these jackets might not be for everyone it is impossible to deny the beauty of these garments.
1) FDMTL: Long Haori Jacket
First up is FDMTL’s Long Haori Jacket—a long-cut, made in Japan jacket constructed from indigo dyed sashiko fabric. This piece features two front, patchwork pockets, tonal stitching, and wide side slits that complete the piece’s aesthetic. Without so much as a tie closure, this jacket makes an excellent layering piece.
Available for $395 from Cultizm.
2) Blue Blue Japan: Hanten Jacket
Blue Blue Japan’s Hanten Jacket is made from indigo dyed sashiko fabric with short, wide sleeves, a mid-length cut, and two front hand pockets. With a single button closure, this jacket has a very distinctive look that will not fit into everyone’s wardrobe, but if you wear baggy pants and slip-on shoes this might just be up your alley.
Available for $519 from End Clothing.
3) Akashi-Kama: Noragi Jacket
Akashi-Kama’s Noragi Jacket is a kimono-styled jacket made in the USA from Japanese chambray. With its lightweight fabric and loose, tied front closure, this is an easy jacket to wear year round. These jackets feature a contrasting yoke lining and gold aglets where the tie is attached, giving these jackets a little flair to bring up their minimalist style.
Available for $125 from Akashi-Kama.
4) Enfin Leve: Oinarri Noragi Bomber Jacket
Enfin Leve’s Oinarri Noragi Bomber Jacket definitely begs the question as to what makes a jacket kimono-inspired, but given that the silhouette is similar to both Noragi and Hanten jackets it seems to fit the bill. This unique piece of techwear features a front cinch closure, Thinsulate insulation, and is constructed from Stotz Etaproof fabric.
Available for €465 from Enfin Leve.
5) Naked and Famous: Kimono Sakiori Denim Jacket
Naked and Famous’ Kimono Sakiori Denim Jacket really accentuates the the 16Oz. Japanese rag cloth denim that it is constructed from. Made from 85%/15% cotton/acrylic blend fabric derived from recycled denim, this single tie closure Noragi jacket would look good in any denimhead’s wardrobe. Plus, this made in Canada jacket has a matching pair of jeans so you can really complete the look if you like.
Available for $440 from Tate and Yoko.
Plus One – Kapital: SHA-KA Roughout Jacket
Kapital’s SHA-KA Roughout Jacket features the same, classic silhouette we’ve seen on this list but this time as a leather jacket. It features an indigo dyed satin lining, and the top notch construction you’d expect from Kapital. While this isn’t a piece that most of us would feel comfortable wearing everyday, it will certainly age beautifully if you do.
Available for $2525 from Blue in Green.
