Rising star of the Japanese denim scene, Tanuki, continues to elevate its offerings through innovative interpretations of our favorite fabric. A relatively young brand, Tanuki is run by a group of dedicated denim craftsmen who pride themselves on their ability to manipulate shuttle looms to weave unique renditions of selvedge in contemporary streetwear silhouettes that have denim-heads turning.
We’ve teamed up with Tanuki to give away three pieces of the brand’s Kaze denim offerings by way of Instagram. The trio of 13 oz. denim up for grabs consists of:
The KJKT is Tanuki’s contemporary take on the archetypal Type III trucker jacket with extra length in the body, and additional hand warmer pockets at the waist. The jeans are both slim-fitting five-pocket numbers coming in both a standard tapered fit, and a high tapered fit which features a longer rise and more room in the top block.
The Kaze denim itself is one of Tanuki’s most nimble fabrics, which stands out with a bright shade of indigo reminiscent of vintage mid-century denim. This is achieved through a special rope dyeing process that involves fewer dips into indigo the dye and more exposure to oxygen, resulting in a light, steely blue shade with greenish undertones. Utilizing a blend of Peruvian Aspero, Supima, and Californian short-staple cotton, this fabric is woven on shuttle looms using extra low-tension techniques that provides the denim with a complex, slubby texture.
Each garment is made in Okayama and comes complete with handsome detailing in form of an embroidered 二 (Ni) logo, vegetable-tanned deerskin leather patch, custom Tanuki hardware, red selvedge ID, and contrasting Japanese herringbone pocket bags.
