Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.
Avid Heddels’ readers know we compile a yearly, Summerweight Selvedge list, and we’re proud to release the 2021 version. This years list features six of the best selvedge options that are 11Oz. or less, the best denim options for hot and humid weather. While yes, shorts and lightweight trousers will probably be more comfortable, these denim options are great for those who can’t stand the idea of not fading denim for a few months.
1) Hiroshi Kato: “The Pen” – 10.5oz.
Hiroshi Kato isn’t one of the most talked about brands around these parts, but they offer a great array of lightweight denim options. One of their best offerings is The Pen, a pair of selvedge jeans made from 10.5Oz. black/black denim woven from a 96%/4% cotton/polyurethane blend. This 4-way stretch fabric keeps these jeans comfortable despite their tight fit, and offers an additional degree of durability due to the synthetic blend.
Available for $198 from Hiroshi Kato.
2) Momotaro: 1101SP “Going to Battle” – 10oz.
Momotaro is one of the most well respected names in the world of raw denim, making their 1101SP “Going to Battle” jeans one of the most compelling pairs on this list. These jeans are made from 10Oz., 100% Zimbabwe cotton selvedge denim. The lightweight fabric, mixed with the fact that these jeans come in a baggy, straight cut, results in a great summer option. While regular fit jeans might not be up everyone’s alley, these are the obvious choice if that’s your style of choice.
Available for $156 from Denimio.
3) Benzak: BC-01 Chino in Linen Selvedge – 8.5oz.
Just because you are looking for a new pair of lightweight, selvedge denim pants doesn’t mean you need to be confined to only jeans. Benzak’s BC-01 Chino in Linen Selvedge is a fantastic option in a slightly more formal package. Made from a 8.5Oz., 80%/20% cotton/linen blend, these chinos are one of the best summer selvedge options out there. They’re well patterned, lightweight, and easy to dress up or down, making them a great choice for anyone needing to expand their rotation this season.
Available for $215 from Cultizm.
4) Unbranded: UB#22 Stretch Selvedge – 11oz.
Unbranded’s UB#22 Stretch Selvedge collection was on our list last year, and while we try not to repeat entries some offerings can’t be overlooked. These jeans lightweight at 11Oz., come in a wide range of colorways, and are cost effective, making them a solid option for anyone wanting a new pair of jeans for warmer weather. The fabric is a 99%/1% cotton/stretch blend for that added comfort and durability.
Available for $110 from Unbranded.
5) Naked and Famous: Summer Sky Selvedge – 10oz.
Naked & Famous consistently has a lightweight, summer jean and their Summer Sky Selvedge is one of their most interesting offerings yet. Made from a 10Oz., 100% cotton selvedge denim that was lightly dyed to replicate the hues from 1960’s denim, these jeans are perfect for those hot, summer days.
Available for $160 from Tate + Yoko.
Plus One – Dawson x TSPTR: Zuma Pants in Neppy Denim – 10oz.
Dawson x TSPTR’s Zuma Pants in Neppy Denim are one of the most fun denim pants we’ve seen in a while. Not only do they have a beautiful, neppy texture and unique pattern that looks original without feeling gimmicky, the 10oz. denim makes them one of the best summer selvedge options. While the style certainly isn’t for everyone, if it’s something you like it has all the details you could possibly hope for: chainstitched hems, Corozo buttons, fully felled inseams, and so much more.
Available for £240 from Dawson.
