Denim Shirts – Five Plus One

Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.

It’s officially autumn, and that means it’s unofficially overshirt season. They come in all shapes and sizes: CPO shirts, heavy flannels, corduroy—but for many of us there is no better option than denim. Whether you intend to don a Canadian tuxedo or want a denim shirt to go with your favorite chinos, we hope to have you covered with this list.

1) Taylor Stitch: The Western Shirt

Denim-Shirts---Five-Plus-One 1) Taylor Stitch: The Western Shirt

Taylor Stitch offers its Western Shirt in a wide range of denims and other fabrics, but our favorite by far is their Nihon Menpu Reserver Selvedge. This 8oz. denim is heavy enough to add some warmth to your outfit without feeling overburdening, and it meshes perfectly with the western inspired shirt details. Completed with mother of pearl snaps, brass concho top button, and selvedge detailing, this shirt is a great pick as the weather starts to cool down.

Available for $198 from Taylor Stitch.

2) Iron Heart: 33- Western

Denim-Shirts---Five-Plus-One-2)-Iron-Heart-33--Western

The western shirt train continues with Iron Heart’s 33-T/BLK Western shirt: a 12oz. selvedge denim shirt with Permex snaps, tonal stitching, selvedge details, and so much more. While 12oz. might not be too heavy when it comes to jeans, it’s quite hefty for a shirt — so be prepared for some discomfort while breaking in this shirt and some serious warmth once it’s worked its way into your wardrobe.

Available for $315 from Division Road.

3) Rogue Territory: Stealth Denim Work Shirt

Rogue Territory really knows how to pick great denims and match them with the right pattern, something we really see in their Stealth Denim Work Shirt. It’s made from an 11oz. black/black selvedge denim with tonal stitching, black urea buttons, and black chainstitch runoff at the hem. If you’re a fan of heavy duty shirts and want to add the perfect, black denim shirt to your collection then this is a great option.

Available for $245 from Rogue Territory.

4) Muller & Bros: Garage Shirt

Denim-Shirts---Five-Plus-One-4)-Muller-&-Bros-Garage-Shirt

There is a constant question of whether fabric or fit reigns supreme when choosing a garment, and while the denim used for Muller & Bros’ Garage Shirt offers excellent evidence for fabric being the more important factor the shirt’s fit is no slouch either. This shirt is made in Japan from a 10oz. neppy denim, and features indigo stitching, tonal buttons, and a 1930s inspired collar.

Available for $204 from Redcast Heritage Co.

5) Pure Blue Japan: Raised Back CPO Shirt

Denim-Shirts---Five-Plus-One-5)-Pure-Blue-Japan-Raised-Back-CPO-Shirt

This iteration of Pure Blue Japan’s Raised Back CPO Shirt looks phenomenal with its 80%/20% cotton/polyester blend denim fabric. Based off of 1930’s CPO shirts, this piece features a single chest pocket, oversized buttons, and hand-warmer pockets. Intended to be worn as an overshirt, this brushed denim shirt is sure to be comfortable enough to wear as a base layer if that’s the void you are looking to fill in your wardrobe.

Available for $305 from Clutch Cafe.

Plus One – Indigofera: Fargo Shirt in Low Desert Denim

Denim-Shirts---Five-Plus-One-Plus-One---Indigofera-Fargo-Shirt-in-Low-Desert-Denim

Most denim shirts come in only two colors: indigo and black, and while we love both of those colorways sometimes it’s nice to see something a bit different. That’s why it’s great to see Indigofera’s Fargo Shirt available in a color they call Low Desert Denim: a brownish-mauve tone that’s quite difficult to describe. In a classic cut with two front pockets and a snap closure, this shirt just looks great however you look at it. It’s finished with lightweight, indigo dyed lining if the idea of wearing a denim shirt with no indigo feels too sacrilegious.

Available for $265 from Pancho & Lefty.
