Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.
If you are looking to add a statement piece to your wardrobe then there is no better choice than an oversized cardigan. Generally taking the place of a coat or jacket, these extra long garments are also great for lounging around the house. That said, with the right combination of an attractive pattern, quality yarn, and a good fit you’ll likely find yourself reaching for your new cardigan more and more.
1) Pendleton: The Original Westerley
Pendleton’s The Original Westerley is one of the most iconic sweaters on the planet thanks to its presence in the movie The Big Lebowski, and now this popular piece of knitwear is being made yet again. Made of lambswool, this oversized cardigan is a phenomenal way to start warm this winter, especially if you are partial to zip up sweaters. Available in three colors, this is the kind of sweater you find yourself grabbing each and every morning.
Available for $249 from Pendleton.
2) Kuon: Long Cardigan
While many of us like oversized cardigans for their added warmth, Kuon’s Long Cardigan is a great choice for those who like the style but aren’t necessarily looking for some serious layering. While still made of 98%/2% wool/polyester fabric, this unlined sweater is the ultimate in draping knitwear. If you want an oversized sweater but aren’t a fan of the chunky, broad shouldered cardigans than this piece might be the answer.
Available for $428 from No Man Walks Alone.
3) RRL: Hand-Knit Ranch Cardigan
RRL makes some great oversized cardigans every winter, and this year’s Hand-Knit Ranch Cardigan continues this trends. While it might look like this sweater is knit from pure wool, in reality a 32%/26%/20%/12%/10% linen/lambswool/wool/mulberry silk/cotton blend that really sets it apart from the rest of the pack. This material works wonderfully with the geometric pattern, and while the price is high you get an awful lot of sweater for the money.
Available for $1600 from Ralph Lauren.
4) De Bonne Facture: LXR Washed Wool Cardigan Jacket – Grey Glencheck
It can be tough to differentiate between an oversized cardigan and a robe, and De Bonne Facture’s LXR Washed Wool Cardigan Jacket certainly walks this line. That said, the 100% wool material and almost formal pattern of the fabric does help to identify this piece as a sweater. This made in France sweater features patchwork pockets, a shawl collar, and belted waste, all of which come together to form a great, chunky layering piece.
Available for $625 from Division Road.
5) Maison Kitsuné: Mk Patch V-Neck Cardigan
Not all oversized sweaters have to be extra long. Maison Kitsuné’s Mk Patch V-Neck Cardigan features extra long raglan sleeves, which makes this sweater appear both long limbed and broad shouldered. It’s made in Frace from 40%/38%/15%/5%/2% Alpaca/Wool/Polyamide/Virgin Wool/Elastane blend that will surely help to keep you warm. Available in two colors, this is the kind of sweater that’s easy to work into most any wardrobe.
Available for $339 from End Clothing.
Plus One – KAPITAL: Intarsia Wool Cardigan
If you are looking for the most oversized sweaters available then Kapital’s offerings should definitely be on your radar. One such piece is their Intarsia Wool Cardigan, which I’m personally partial to given its animal motif pattern. This made in Japan knee-length knit is made from 100% wool and features a button closure, oversized sleeves, and shawl collar for added warmth and structure.
Available for $1105 from Mr. Porter.
