Shortwing Brogued Shoes – Five Plus One

Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.

Whether you are looking at a pair of casual shorting bluchers or formal shortwing oxfords, it’s hard to deny the inherit beauty of the shortwing design. We’ve put together a list of some of our favorite brogued shoes and hope that something on this list will fill whatever gap exists in your wardrobe.

1) Joseph Cheaney & Sons: Avon C Wingtip Brogue

Shortwings---Five-Plus-One 1) Joseph Cheaney & Sons: Avon C Wingtip Brogue

If you are a fan of chunky shortwing bluchers then Cheaney’s Avon C Wingtip Brogue should definitely be on your radar. Made in England on a full fitting last, these shoes feature large diameter brogueing, grainy leather, and a commando sole, which all comes together to form a very compelling pair of casual shortwings.

Available for £329 (~$428) from Cheaney.

2) Löf & Tung: Aldrin Horween Cordovan Shortwing Oxfords

Another option for casual shortwings are Grenson’s Archie Suede Wingtip Brogues. Made on England with a suede outer, chunky lugged sole, large brogues, and a thick stitched welt, these shortwings are great for anyone with a casual wardrobe. While I find myself gravitating toward boots more than shoes, the heft of these shoes has me rethinking my preferences.

Available for $475 from Mr. Porter.

4) Carmina: Austerity Brogue Oxford

Shortwings---Five-Plus-One-4)-Carmina-Austerity-Brogue-Oxford

If you want a pair of formal shortwings then Carmina’s Austerity Brogue Oxford is a clear choice. Featuring closed lacing, no brogues, and smooth black leather, these shoes are about as formal as a shortwing can be. While certainly not as formal as a balmoral, these shortwings can easily be paired with your favorite suit.

Available for $475 from Carmina.

5) Tricker’s: Bourton Brogue Derby

Shortwings---Five-Plus-One-5)-Tricker's-Bourton-Brogue-Derby

Tricker’s makes some of the most popular shortwing brogues, such as their Bourton Brogue Derby shown here in Horween’s iridescent Petrol Chamois Roughout. These feature that classic, British style with large brogues, a storm welt, and a chunky commando sole, but feature a ton of other great details like a bellow tongue and natural midsole.

Available for $535 from Division Road.

Featuring a mix of dark brown calfskin and beige twill, these shortwings have a level refinement and attention to detail matched by few others. While certainly not cheap, if you are looking for a pair of shortwings to wear on special occasions and have the budget these deserve to be considered.
