Heavyweight Turtleneck Sweaters – Five Plus One

Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.

Whether you’re looking to layer up, stay warm without the need for a coat or jacket, or just enter turtle mode for the first time, you can’t go wrong with a chunky turtleneck to envelop you in coziness.

As one of the most iconic knitwear styles, there are hundreds of different Turtlnecks out there from a wide array of makers. With the cold snap almost upon us, we thought it was time to revisit the Turtleneck in Five Plus One, this time zooming in on the chunkier, heavyweight variants. We hope this guide puts you onto a solid Turtleneck to add to your list.

1) Inis Meain: “Gort” Turtleneck

Chunky-Turtleneck---Five-Plus-One 1) Inis Meain: "Gort" Turtleneck

Ini Meain might not be one of the first brands you think of when sweater shopping, but they really should be. Their Gort Turtleneck is just one example of their excellent knitwear: built from an 80%/20% wool/cashmere blend and hand-knitted in Ireland.

This is the kind of heavy-duty Turtle neck you’ll have well into your old age. It features a charming vertical zig-zag pattern and lots of flecks of contrasting yarn color, which works very well with the thick turtleneck, and the ribbed cuffs/ hem.

Available for $795 from No Man Walks Alone.

2) Howlin’ by Morrison: “Moonchild” Turtleneck

Chunky-Turtleneck---Five-Plus-One-2)-Howlin'-by-Morrison-Moonchild-Turtleneck

Howlin’ has become quite popular in the world of knitwear over the last decade, and their latest Moonchild Turtleneck shows exactly why. With a whimsical pattern, top-notch construction, and quality materials, these sweaters don’t really have a weak spot. Made in Scotland from 100% merino wool with raglan sleeves, this is an easy sweater to work into nearly any wardrobe.

This model features vertical ribbing at the cuffs, hem, and turtleneck, and the whole piece features textural neps throughout that look like you’re staring deep into the knitwear galaxy.

Available for $255 from Blue Owl.

3) Heimat Textil: Boat Roll Neck Sweater

Chunky-Turtleneck---Five-Plus-One-3)-Heimat-Textil-Boat-Roll-Neck-Sweater

Heimat isn’t pulling any punches with their latest Boat Roll Neck Sweater. Made in Germany from over two pounds of 100% virgin wool in 5 gauge yarn, this sweater has some serious heft to it. The pattern is pretty classic, but with sexy knitted details at the cuffs and hem that really set it apart from other chunky sweaters. Available in multiple colors, you gettin’ a lot of sweater for your money, here.

Available for $275 from Franklin & Poe.

4) Batoner: Signature Turtleneck

Chunky-Turtleneck---Five-Plus-One-4)-Batoner-Signature-Turtleneck

Batoner‘s Signature Turtleneck is another useful option for a chunky turtleneck, and the almost iridescent sheen of this sweater’s vertical stripes really sets it apart from the other turtlenecks on this list. With an almost tech-wear vibe to it, this 100% wool sweater is made in Japan with raglan sleeves and the requisite turtleneck collar.

Available for $244 from Lost & Found.

5) RRL: Aran-Knit Wool-Blend Turtleneck Sweater

Chunky-Turtleneck---Five-Plus-One-5)-RRL-Aran-Knit-Wool-Blend-Turtleneck-Sweater

Anyone who has been in the knitwear game long enough knows just how good RRL‘s sweaters are, and this year’s Aran-Knit Wool-Knit Turtleneck Sweater continues this trend nicely. This classic cable-knit sweater is made from a 60%/20%/20% wool/viscose/nylon blend which provides both warmth, comfort, and durability, whilst also giving this sweater beautiful neppy yarn tufts throughout. These speckles of color continue through the ribbed cuffs, hem, and turtleneck, blending seamlessly with the pattern of the body.

Available for $595 from Canoe Club.

Plus One – Chamula: Granny Square Turtleneck Pullover

Chunky-Turtleneck---Five-Plus-One-Plus-One---Chamula-Granny-Square-Turtleneck-Pullover

In my humble opinion, Chamula makes some of the best chunky sweaters in the world. And of all the pieces of knitwear they make, it’s hard to deny their Granny Square Turtleneck Pullover is the most fun. This 100% merino wool sweater is hand-knitted in Mexico in a one-size-fits-all pattern, with a massive, chunky turtleneck and dropped shoulder pattern. While you might see something akin to this in a thrift store, it’s unlikely it will be made with the same passion and attention to detail that’s provided by Chamula.

Available for $660 from Chamula.
