Established in 1993 by Japanese manufacturer Toyo Enterprise, Buzz Rickson’s has built a reputation in the repro world as one of the most faithful lines of early, rare, and classic military and workwear garments available for sale. Manufactured using old-school machines and methods whenever possible, there is no compromising when it comes to producing their roster of cult classics. And for the first time ever, it will now be offered at Philly’s own Franklin and Poe.
To celebrate the stockist getting Buzzed up, we figured we’d touch on some of our favorites that they have up for grabs.
The first has to be the Set-In Crew Neck Sweatshirt in a variety of colors. Modeled after some of the earliest sweatshirts in existence, they are made using loopwheel machines from the 1920s just like originals would have been, making these an incredibly dedicated homage and a staff favorite here at Heddels. The result is a tubular-shaped design that weighs in at 12 oz. and is finished with 4-needled lockstitch seams. A recipe for a long life ahead with much softness to look forward to. And yes, double ‘v’ stitching is in the house.
Next up is the Rough Wear Clothing Co. Type A-2 Bomber because, yeah, of course Buzz is geeking out into contract numbers. Made from a veg-tanned bronco hide, you can look forward to a larger collar than other variations and an unparalleled dyeing process which includes tannin that has been extracted from tree bark and classic seal brown aniline dye. Built to last forever and develop some ridiculous patina along the way, no need to hunt down an original when you can get the same joy out of an exacting replica that can be worn without worrying about structural integrity.
Lastly, we have to throw the WWII Black Denim Waist Overalls. Modeled after wartime denim which was simplified due to rationing, these jeans feature arcuate-less back pockets, HBT pocket bags, and laurel wreath fly. Oh, and a roomy wide fit that goes with everything. However, these are fascinating because they implement a slight ‘zag’ from the Buzz Rickson purist approach. As part of the William Gibson collection, these jeans are admittedly a riff. Black WWII denim never existed making these somewhat of a dream vintage piece – or rather a great pair of black jeans for fashion lovers who want a bit of historical significance to their gear.
There is of course much, much more on offer over at Franklin and Poe, and we’re excited to seeing what they buy in going forward.
