Studio D’Artisan doesn’t need an introduction. Founded in 1979, it was the first of the famed Osaka 5 and remains one of the most influential Japanese denim brands of all time. A true collector’s item, the SP-121 18oz “Amami Dorozome” Type II jacket, released to celebrate SDA’s 45th anniversary, shows the brand has no intention of slowing down.
Showcasing Japanese craft to the world, Studio D’Artisan crafted a bunch of classic Type II-inspired jackets from an 18 o.z unsanforized double indigo selvedge denim, before shipping them over 1000 kilometers to the beautiful island of Amami Oshima. Here, it’s put into the hands of master artisans who garment-dyed through the process of Dorozome mud dying, a technique that’s been around for centuries. This involves soaking the garments in mud, where a chemical reaction between the iron found in the mud and tannic acid from the pigment of Sharinbai, a tree native to Amami, dyes the fabric (in this case) a beautiful, deep black with brown and blue undertones. There are very few mud fields left on the island, as they need a very fine soil quality and an abundance of iron for the dying process to work properly.
Bringing together traditional Japanese craft techniques, vintage Americana silhouettes, and Japanese denim innovations, this SP-121 is a true celebration of everything that Studio D’Artisan stands for. We can’t wait to see what the next 45 years bring.
