When it comes to classic raw denim jackets, many brands tend to stick to the industry’s roots while adding their own takes on iconic cuts and styles. Railcar Fine Goods is a brand that pays attention to the details from yesteryear and uses them to concoct their own denim creations. Take, for instance, their new Explorer Jacket.

Right off the bat, the denimhead in all of us is trying to discern what the heck it is. There are pleats, but only a couple, and they are far apart. There is an acorn chest pocket, but it has unconventional stitching patterns on it. Seeing this piece in person at the recent New York Market Week, Steven of Railcar referred to this jacket as a “Type 1.5”, and we think that sums it up nicely. It’s constructed from Japanese black-on-black selvedge denim with triple flat felled chainstitch seams throughout, and no exposed edges on the interior. To top it all off, each copper rivet is hand set for added strength and style.
