Neppy Shirts – Five Plus One

Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.

While neppy denim remains my favorite style of heavily textured garment, sometimes you just want some visual interested added to your shirt game — and when that’s the case there is no better option than some neppy shirting. Whether you’re wearing a base layer or looking to layer with an overshirt, a little nep goes a long way to make your outfit more interesting.

1) Gustin: Brushed Nep Twill

Neppy-Shirts---Five-Plus-One 1) Gustin: Brushed Nep Twill

Gustin remains one of the most consistent crowd-funded clothing brands, and their large swath of Brushed Nep Twill shirts is just one reason why. Made from ultra-neppy 6oz. twill with mother of pearl buttons and two chest pockets, these shirts are classically designed with an incredibly modern fabric. Pair them with your more well worn jeans/boots combo and you’ll have a new favorite outfit on your hands.

2) Naked & Famous: Heavyweight Brushed Twill

3) Kestin: Tain Shirt

Neppy-Shirts---Five-Plus-One-3)-Kestin-Tain-Shirt

Neppy fabrics often have unique blends of materials in order to create that signature texture, and Kestin’s Tain Shirt is no different with its 83%/10%/5%/2% cotton/silk/wool/viscose blend. The grid-like pattern of the shirt makes the neps stand out even more, and the two interior pockets make this shirt a great option if you’re looking for an overshirt.

Available for $105 from End.

4) Rogue Territory: Neppy Denim Patrol Workshirt

Neppy-Shirts---Five-Plus-One-4)-Rogue-Territory-Neppy-Denim-Patrol-Workshirt

Rogue Territory’s Neppy Denim Patrol Shirt is definitely intended to be an overshirt with its two chest pockets and two hand pockets. The 11oz. denim is quite heavy duty for a shirt, offering enough warmth for spring days and an excellent layering options when things are a bit more frigid. This shirt is finished with cross elbow patches, urea buttons, and RGT signature pen pocket.

Available for $130 from Stag Provisions.

5) 3sixteen: Fatigue Over Shirt

Neppy-Shirts---Five-Plus-One-5)-3sixteen-Fatigue-Over-Shirt

While 3sixteen’s Fatigue Over Shirt advertises its fabrics’ slub, it’s not short on nep either. Made from a 69%/31% cotton/linen blend fabric, this shirt features tonal neps throughout, matching buttons, and a unique, crossed yoke. While the neps on this shirt are definitely more understated than many of the other shirts on this list, the fabric it uses is just as (if not more) beautiful than any other on this list.

Available for $220 from Self Edge.

Plus One – Freenote: Alta Overshirt in Nep Twill

While we’ve featured some fairly affordable shirts on this list, that doesn’t mean that Freenote’s pricier Alta Overshirt shouldn’t be considered. Available in three colorways, this shirt features a 45%/35%/20% cotton/wool/polyester fabric blend with rainbow neps throughout and custom enamel buttons. The lined yoke definitely cements this shirt as an overshirt, but with such a beautiful fabric would you really want it to be covered up by a jacket?

Available for $400 from Franklin & Poe.
