Heddels explains Men’s Jeans
Jeans began as a garment for men, originally worn by Genoese sailors while performing their duties aboard ship. In the 1850s, Levi Strauss began selling blue jeans to miners during the California Gold Rush. He partnered with Jacob Davis in 1873 and began selling stronger jeans with riveted pockets for extra durability.
Then, in the 1930s, Hollywood began producing lots of Western movies, all featuring cowboys wearing jeans. Dude ranches in places such as Nevada and Wyoming became popular vacation destinations, with Americans living in the east bringing home pairs of denim overalls for friends and family.
However, it wasn’t until the 1950s that jeans really started to become fashionable. Jean-clad movie stars such as James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause and Marlon Brando in The Wild One lent jeans an air of danger and defiance that appealed to male teenagers and young adults. Jack Kerouac’s novel On the Road, with the iconic “Dean Moriarty” (heavily based on his close friend Neal Cassady), further strengthened the connection between jeans and the younger, misunderstood generation rebelling against tradition and authority. The majority of university and college students, both male and female, began wearing jeans. In the 1960s, the hippie movement adopted bell-bottom jeans as part of their unofficial uniform. By the 1980s manufacturers had begun producing “designer jeans”, cementing the trousers’ place in fashion forever.
Today, men’s jeans are offered in a variety of styles and fits such as loose fit, straight fit, or slim fit. In general, they have a straighter cut than women’s jeans, with a roomier crotch and looser waistband. Men’s jeans are sized according to waist measurement and inseam length. For example, a size 34-32 would have a 34” waist and a 32” inseam.
