Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.
Harrington-style jackets are a classic, lightweight piece of outerwear ideal for those cool summer evenings or early autumn frolics. Originally designed by Baracuta, just about every brand producing heritage menswear has its own take on this style, especially if the brand is British in origin. While we’ve talked about this style before, we’re hoping you find something you like on this list of currently available Harringtons.
1) Uniqlo: Harrington Jacket
If you’re looking for an inexpensive entry into the world of Harrington Jackets, then Uniqlo deserves some consideration. Offering this classic style in three colors and a ton of sizes, it’s easy and inexpensive to work this jacket into your wardrobe and try it out. It does deviate from the original pattern, most notably with the non-flapped front hand pockets. That said, the original pockets were a bit divisive with many preferring the slant pockets used by many brands (Uniqlo included)
Available for $30 from Uniqlo.
2) Orgueil: Harrington Sport Jacket
Orgueil, a sub-brand of Studio d’Artisan offering traditional workwear-inspired clothing, makes a great interpretation of the Harrington dubbed the Harrington Sport Jacket. This two-toned jacket features all the classic details: double button collar, ribbed cuffs and hem, and traditional flapped, buttoned front hand pockets. That said, the two-toned fabric brings a bit of interest to this jacket, which also uses natural horn buttons and a check lining to set it apart from the competition.
Available for $335 from Corlection.
3) Private White VC: Archive Ventile Harrington
If you’re already a big fan of Harrington-style jackets and are looking to pick up a top-quality edition, then Private White VC‘s Archive Ventile Harrington is an excellent choice. The pattern is about as classic as it gets, but the details are really what make this jacket special: polished copper hardware, corduroy-trimmed collar, and bonded seams. Available in three colorways, this jacket is easy to match with a wide range of styles and is made in a historic, water-resistant Ventile fabric pioneered by Private White VC themselves.
Available for $675 from Division Road.
4) Barbour: Harrington Wax Jacket
You may need more water resistance than a traditional Harrington jacket would offer. If so, Barbour‘s Harrington Wax Jacket should be on your radar. This jacket is made from a 6 oz. waxed cotton fabric, but that’s not the only way it differs from the original — with no ribbing or flapped hand pockets, the overall shape of this jacket is a bit sleeker. Finished with a looped zipper and available in several, neutral colorways, this Harrington is definitely one of the more interesting ones on the market.
Available for $190 from End.
5) Baracuta: G9 Classic Harrington
We couldn’t possibly write about Harrington jackets without including Baracuta‘s G9 Classic Harrington on the list. Available in basically every fabric and colorway imaginable, it’s easy to find a version that matches your style. The pattern remains true to the original, with the double button collar, elasticated cuffs and hem, and flapped buttoned hand pockets.
Available for €399 from Cultizm.
Plus One – Coherence: Gianni Jacket
Coherence‘s Gianni Jacket is a great reinterpretation of the classic Harrington. While many of the details remained the same, the addition of a small coin pocket on the front, an extra button at the collar, and pleated sleeves make this jacket a real standout. While it doesn’t have the same charm as the original, it has an elegance all its own and comes with unrivaled construction from one of Japan’s most unique jacket-makers.
Available for $1050 from Clutch Cafe.
