One More On – July 2023

Welcome to One More On, a monthly styled series. “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take at least one thing off.” Thanks but no thanks, Coco Chanel. This series will bring our readers an outfit chock-full of long-lasting basics that you could wear day in and out without attracting much attention, with one more cherry-on-top piece that colors outside the lines a bit. Think of our Five Plus One series, but for fits.

July is the month that promises to turn even the most composed individuals into walking ice cream cones. Fitting, given that it’s National Ice Cream Month. Quite frankly, July is a magical time of year. The peak of summer, it’s the time of year when the sun shines with the intensity of a thousand angry barbecue grills, and our foreheads become the perfect canvases for spontaneous sunburn art.

There’s a common misconception among the heritage-wear community that you can’t look good during the summer months, largely because layering isn’t an option – unless you fancy an acute case of heatstroke – and denim isn’t the most summer-friendly fabric. Therefore, the theme for this month is camp vibes. We’re going comfy, we’re going vintage sportswear, and we’re going denimless. Queue the gasps.

Some of you will continue to rock denim, and that’s OK. But, ahem, by reading this, you understand and agree that Heddels and its associated writers cannot be held responsible for any fashion faux pas, raised eyebrows, or excessive denim-related heat discomfort resulting from your personal decision to wear a Canadian Tuxedo in the scorching month of July.

Now that’s out of the way, onto the fit.

Barns Outfitters Vintage Like Short-Sleeve Wisconsin State T-shirt

One-More-On---July-2023-front-and-back-model-Barns-Outfitters-Vintage-Like-Short-Sleeve-Wisconsin-State-T-shirt

Go, Pack, go! Queue the slew of hateful comments from Bears, Lions, and Vikings supporters. Football aside, I have a real affinity for the US, specifically its beautiful scenery and national parks. Unfortunately, I’ve only visited via Google and stock imagery; however, that doesn’t mean I haven’t formed an attachment. Speaking of which, a state that’s known for its breathtaking landscapes – as well as its cheese, dairy, and beer – is Wisconsin.

Barns Outfitters ‘Wisconsin State’ tee pays homage to America’s dairyland with this vintage-inspired t-shirt. Looking like it’s been ripped straight out of a Wythe or Remi Relief lookbook, Barns’ Wisconsin tee has been made from a thick, durable cotton that’s been washed for a vintage look and feel. The tee features a small ‘Wisconsin State’ graphic on the front and a larger vintage-feeling ‘Wisconsin State Forest Park’ graphic on the back. Super simple; super easy to wear; and super reasonably priced, too.

Available for $48 from Hinoya

The Real McCoy’s MP23014 Summer Corduroy Swim Shorts

One-More-On---July-2023-The-Real-McCoy’s-MP23014-Summer-Corduroy-Swim-Shorts-Front-model-and-front

When I put together these One More On pieces, I normally have hundreds of tabs open which I comb through at the end when I’m assembling the fit. As soon as I came across these shorts from The Real McCoy’s, I closed all my tabs and started building a fit around them. What a pair of shorts.

Made in Japan from a lightweight cotton corduroy, yes, corduroy, these swim, yes, swim, shorts feature a drawstring elastic waist, side seam pockets, a welted flap button coin pocket, and a roomier fit for comfort and ease of movement.

Corduroy is a fabric, as you guys know, that’s typically associated with the colder seasons – cozy fireplaces and whatnot. Clearly, The Real McCoy’s doesn’t think so. Imagine strolling along the shoreline, turning heads as you sport corduroy swim shorts that make you look like you just stepped out of a time machine from the ‘50s.

You’ll get some looks – some envious ones, no doubt – but don’t let that stop you riding the waves in these bad boys.

Available in salmon or beige for $255 from Lost & Found

Pras Shellcap Low Sneakers in Off-White

One-More-On---July-2023-Pras-Shellcap-Low-Sneakers-in-Off-White

On the tootsies, I’ve gone for Pras’ Shellcap sneakers in off-white. Arguably, most Pras sneaker colorways would work here, however, off-white works best for a clean, minimal look.

Pras’ shellcap low sneakers are as classic as you can get. Inspired by the sneakers worn by athletes in the ‘50s, the sneakers feature a non-slip rubber sole, a shellcap toe, red stitch heel panel, and a vintage-inspired heel plate. Each pair, which has been made by artisans in Kurume, Japan, comes with a full explanation detailing the extensive manufacturing process. You might not think that’s anything to get excited by, but the kiln-fired vulcanization method, which is where the rubber sole and shoe body are joined together, is pretty unique and worth looking into.

Available for $142 from Redcast Heritage.

H.W. Dog Washed OG Indigo Cap

One-More-On---July-2023-H.W.-Dog-Washed-OG-Indigo-Cap

The H.W. Dog Washed OG Indigo Cap is a classic and stylish accessory that exudes vintage charm. Crafted from ‘linen denim’ (you’re welcome, denimheads) in Japan and adorned with some chain-stitch embroidery on the crown, this cap adds a cool and laid-back touch to any summer fit.

The cap features an adjustable strap at the back for a comfortable fit, and a six-panel crown construction. If you’re unfamiliar with the H.W. Dog brand, it’s a brand that embodies a vintage Americana aesthetic, drawing inspiration from the spirit of adventure and classic American style. A premium hatter based in Tokyo, Japan, H.W. Dog focuses squarely on quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. Again another cap you’ll be wearing and fading for years to come.

Available for $145 from Clutch Cafe
