“All jeans tell a story.” – That’s the credo for Phable, an up-and-coming label coming out of Australia. Created by Luke Hammonds and Brody Davison, Phable is an interesting mash-up of styles.

On one hand, Phable appears to be doing their best to stay true to denim’s roots. Using Japanese selvedge denim, the brand offers two cleanly-styled, classic cuts that pay homage to their roots (for instance, the cowboy-inspired styling on their bootcut pair) and are made on vintage machinery including the denim-geek certified Union Special machines.

Furthermore, the brand’s site features a host of accurate information about denim, including a sizeable glossary (similar to our Dictionary), as well as washing guides and other useful tidbits.

On the flip side, Phable seems to be aiming at the street-wear scene, taking styling and artistic cues from designer brands in the same vein as Jack & Jones or Superdry. On top of this, the mission statement of Phable sounds familiar to anyone who’s followed the increased popularity of raw denim over the past few years. That’s not a bad thing, per se, it’s just very familiar.

It’s an odd combination that gives an equally odd sense of misdirection. One can’t help but feel that Luke and Brody are honest-meaning guys that know their stuff, but that they’re using selling points that most people in their target market won’t care about.

But enough about that, and onto the denim itself! As mentioned above, Phable offers two cuts at present: The Tomahawk (Straight) and The Revolver (Boot-Cut). Both are serialized in a run of 600 pairs for each fit, and are presented in custom cigar boxes.

The Tomahawk is a classic, yet versatile straight fit with a mid-rise.

The Revolver is a slim boot-cut jean that features a modern take on the jeans worn by cowboys back in the day, featuring deep back pockets and a mini bullet belt featuring loops for 6 bullets on the rear of the waistband.
