Chambray Work Shirts – Five Plus One

Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.

It is official spring, and for me that means the start of wearing chambray work shirts as overshirts in place of a jacket. There are a wide range of chambrays currently on the market, so we’ve picked a selection of some of the most compelling options. Join us, and hopefully add a piece to your wardrobe as well.

1) Uniqlo: Chambray Long-Sleeve Work Shirt

If you haven’t ever owned a chambray work shirt before or simply don’t want to spend a lot, then Uniqlo’s Chambray Long-Sleeve Work Shirt is a great starter pick. Made from 100% cotton, this shirt packs a lot of bang for your buck with double and triple stitching, reinforced pockets, and a classic, relaxed pattern. While more expensive options are fun, this piece likely offers everything you need.

2) Unique Garment: Stanley Selvedge Work Shirt

Unique Garment’s Stanley Selvedge Work Shirt is made in Japan with a focus on creating a shirt with a heavy texture. Available in a wide range of colorways, this shirt is made from a heavy 9oz. chambray with triple stitching, selvedge details, chunky buttons, and a stiff collar.

3) Full Count: Lot. 4810 Chambray Work Shirt

Full Count’s Covert Chambray Work Shirts aren’t just great because of their solid design and construction, but also because of their attention to detail. This shirt, shown in the classic blue colorway, is based off of 1940s work shirts, and features a twisted chambray fabric, double stitching, and custom buttons. If you’re looking for a great looking shirt that could be worn both on its own or as an overshirt, this one a great choice.

Available for $235 from Clutch Cafe.

4) Iron Heart: 10Oz. Selvedge Mock Twist Chambray Black

As always, Iron Heart makes their garments from the very best materials available, which definitely shows in their 10oz. Selvedge Mock Twist Chambray. It has a ton of great details, such as triple stitching, felled seams, pen pocket, selvedge lines, and chainstitching. If you can only own one chambray shirt and want something on the heavyweight side, then this is a solid choice indeed.

Available for $300 from Division Road.

5) Sugar Cane: Vat Dye Chambray Work Shirt

For me, the most important factor for a fabric is its texture, and chambray certainly has that. But a close second is the hue, and Sugar Cane’s Vat Dye Chambray Work Shirt is beautiful in that regard due to the unique, vat dyeing methodology used. This shirt is made in Japan and features chainstitch runoff, reinforced elbows, triple stitching, and a great overall pattern.

Available for $125 from Franklin & Poe.

Plus One – Joe & Co: Talbot Chambray Cotton Penny Work Shirt

Chambray-Work-Shirts---Five-Plus-One-Plus-One---Talbot-Chambray-Cotton-Penny-Work-Shirt

The Talbot Chambray Cotton Penny Work Shirt might not have the details that most people look for in a work shirt, but personally I think it’s a fantastic piece. With the irregular height chest pockets, penny collar, side gussets, and corozo buttons, this shirt manages to look unique without feeling gimmicky. Made in the UK in limited quantities, this is the kind of shirt you’ll find yourself wearing for a long time to come.

Available for £135 from Joe & Co.
