Non-Leather Loafers – Five Plus One

Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.

Most of our footwear articles revolve around the same thing: durable boots, thick leather, and classic construction methods. And while all these things are great, they certainly cover only a narrow range of footwear. That’s why we’re exploring the world of fabric footwear, today.  Just because they’re fabric doesn’t mean they’re not durable, quality shoes — and we hope you find that special something your wardrobe is missing.

1) No Man Walks Alone x El Karti: Handmade Moroccan raffia penny loafers, natural

Non-Leather-Loafers---Five-Plus-One-Handmade-Moroccan-raffia-penny-loafers,-natural

El Karti‘s Handmade Moroccan Raffia Penny Loafers might not be your traditional penny loafers, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be worn in place of a classic leather pair. Despite its woven raffia upper, these shoes aren’t vegan; they feature a leather insole and outsole, which certainly adds to the aesthetic. They’re a unique pair, but that material combines with the penny loafer pattern to form something uniquely wearable.

Available for $195 from No Man Walks Alone.

2) MULO: Linen Espadrilles

If there is one thing iconic about espadrilles, it’s their jute sole. And that’s why it’s so weird to see Mulo‘s Linen Espadrilles forgoing that one special feature.

Regardless, the woven banding around these shoes’ soles adds some of that unique aesthetic back into play, and its combination with the linen uppers makes them even more special. Finished on a rubber outsole for optimal comfort and durability, this is one pair of fabric shoes that won’t fail after a season.

Available for £135 (~$180USD) from Mr. Porter.

3) Manolo Blahnik: Agradir Leather Raffia Mules

Manolo Blahnik isn’t a brand we typically cover over here at Heddels, but their Agradir Leather Raffia Mules certainly deserve a place amongst our columns. Made with woven raffia uppers with leather detailing, these might not be the kind of loafers you grab every day, but they’re a beautiful piece perfect for that late Sunday brunch. These made-in-Italy loafers aren’t cheap, but if that doesn’t deter you, they’re an awesome choice.

Available for $745 from Neiman Marcus.

4) One432: Organic Gori

Non-Leather-Loafers---Five-Plus-One-Organic-Gori

One432 might not be a brand you’ve read much about, but they’re definitely worth some research. Dedicated to sustainability and providing their workers with a living wage, One432 produces shoes that are truly one of a kind — plus, their symmetrical design means the left and right shoes are identical, which makes them that much more unique.

This pair is made from a 100% recycled cotton blend with a completely hand-stitched sole.

Available for $140 from One432.

5) RRL: Handwoven Jacquard Espadrille

Non-Leather-Loafers---Five-Plus-One-Handwoven-Jacquard-Espadrille

There are a bunch of fantastic espadrilles out there, but RRL‘s Handwoven Jacquard Espadrille is a really stand-out this season. With their woven jute midsole, crepe outsole, and colorful jacquard upper, these espadrilles won’t be quite as durable as a pair of traditional leather loafers but they certainly have a style you just can’t find with a animal skin pair.

Available for $209 from Ralph Lauren.

Plus One – Loro Piana: Seaside Walk Leather-Trimmed Cotton and Silk-Blend Espadrilles

Non-Leather-Loafers---Five-Plus-One-Seaside-Walk-Leather-Trimmed-Cotton-and-Silk-Blend-Espadrilles

If you’re looking for a pair of espadrilles that are just that much more special, Loro Piana‘s Seaside Walk Espadrilles are worth considering. They’re made with a thick, jute outside which gives them that great espadrille aesthetic, but Loro has included low-profile rubber top soles for extra comfort and grip. Beyond that, the use of a linen twill for the upper makes for a colorful summer shoe that is highly breathable, something that can be appreciated by those who live in less temperate climates.

Available for $695 from Mr. Porter.
