Battenwear’s Pocket Rugby Shirt is a Rugged Ivy/Prep Cheat Code

When we think of functional garments turned fashion icons there are the usual suspects like denim and sweatshirts etc., but what you might not know is the rugby shirt, beyond its life on the pitch, was already being appropriated as ‘workwear’ as early as the 1970s by this guy Yvon Chouinard. Maybe you’ve heard of him. Used as cotton chainmail for climbers, hikers, and general outdoors people thanks to its durable weave and protective collar, the rugby shirt was an instant hit.

Now 50+ years later, Battenwear is paying homage with their Pocket Rugby Shirt in Brown and Ash Grey. Made from 12 oz. cotton jersey, these Canadian-made beasts feature a two-tone palette — three-tone if you count the white placket, rubber buttons, and of course, a neat little chest pocket setting their variation apart from the OGs.

And forget elbow pads, we’re rocking with armpit gussets over in this neck of the woods! Although a dream to wear off the rip, you already know they will only get better as they break in.

Available for $195 from Battenwear.
