One More On – September 2023

I just returned from a short trip to New York on which I met a lady by the name of “Ophelia”. Unfortunately, she didn’t turn out to be the charming young lady I expected. Instead, she manifested as a feisty tropical storm, completely dashing any hopes I had of hitting the city’s eclectic shopping scene dry and in good spirits. Talk about a rocky start to a budding relationship—but a fitting introduction to the unpredictable mood swings that September weather tends to bring.

If the month of September was a person, it would be a hormonal teenager: totally unable to make up its fucking mind. It’s a month where style enthusiasts play a vicious game of sartorial tug-of-war between summer’s swan song and fall’s grand entrance. A month in which your umbrella is likely to get more action than your sunscreen.

But, fear not, for I am here to equip you with the sartorial staples needed to weather the September storm. So, grab yourself a pumpkin spice latte, and let’s get into it.

Battenwear Field Cap in Acorn

Setting the tone for this month’s edition of One More On, I’ve gone for Battenwear’s Field Cap in a lovely Autumnal “Acorn” brown.

When it comes to outdoor-inspired contemporary fashion, Battenwear stands as a beacon of rugged elegance, and its Field Cap is a prime example of this ethos. This headwear masterpiece seamlessly blends functionality, style, and a touch of nostalgia, making it the perfect companion for any adventure, whether you’re traversing mountain trails or navigating urban jungles.

The cap, which has been crafted from 8 Wale corduroy for a cozy dome, features a 6-panel unstructured silhouette, a nylon-webbing adjustable strap and a subtly embroidered Battenwear logo on the front. The perfect everyday fall cap.

Available for $60 from Battenwear.

3sixteen Crosscut Flannel in Alabaster Twill Plaid

3sixteen’s Crosscut Flannel boasts a custom-woven, robust cotton flannel fabric that’s as distinctive as it is durable. With a cleverly designed crossed-back yoke and enamel-coated metal buttons that age beautifully, this shirt screams flannel season.

This flannel’s thickness is perfect for standalone wear during brisk fall days, and its trim fit makes it a superb layering companion for the chilliest of winters. The colorway is neutral and timeless, while the iconic 3sixteen crossed-back yoke silently speaks to those in the know—a subtle nod to a shared appreciation for quality and craftsmanship.

The shirt, which has been made from 100% cotton in India, features a twill pattern, a brushed interior for added softness, and fisheye metal buttons.

Available for $220 from Franklin and Poe.

Post Overalls Army Pants in 10 oz. Vintage Denim

If you haven’t noticed already, this fit is pretty brown. While that’s intentional, of course, we do need to break it up a little. To help me with that, I’ve enlisted the help of Post O’alls and its Army Pants in 10 oz. Vintage Denim.

Crafted in Japan from a sturdy 10 oz. cotton, these Army Pants from Post O’alls showcase their utilitarian essence with two generously sized ‘baker’ style front pockets and two spacious rear pockets. To ensure a precise fit, a cinch back has been thoughtfully integrated, while a button fly adds to the vintage charm, complemented by a retro-style label at the rear. These pants boast a timeless, wide, straight-cut fit, and subtle tonal stitching unifies the overall aesthetic.

The weather in September is temperamental, to say the least. One minute you’re shivering, the next you’re sweating. The weight of these Army Pants hits right in between, meaning no sporadic mid-day wardrobe changes.

Available for $270 from Clutch Cafe.

Danner Light Boot in Khaki

In 1932, the journey of Danner Boots began, pioneering the path for outdoor enthusiasts, a legacy now spanning almost a century. Starting their venture in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, the company eventually found its forever home in the scenic landscapes of Portland, Oregon.

Among Danner’s remarkable offerings, the legendary Danner Light holds a special place. A timeless member of the Made in USA Portland Select Line for nearly 50 years, the Danner Light marked the brand’s maiden voyage into waterproof hiking footwear, showcasing a revolutionary Gore-Tex lining first introduced in 1979. Remaining true to its original blueprint, the boot showcases 1000D Cordura Nylon side panels, a sturdy fiberglass shank for unwavering support and stability, a Vibram Ketterlift sole unit, and premium full-grain leather uppers.

Crafted by skilled hands in the heart of Portland, Oregon, these boots stand as a symbol of American innovation and the enduring spirit of the great outdoors. They also look fantastic, which is why they’re the boot-pick for September’s One More On

Lightweight, breathable, robust—what more could you want?

Available for $465 from Clutch Cafe.

One More On – Battenwear Batten-Down Vest V2 in Dark Brown

From New York to Portland and back again—we’re going full circle with this month’s One More On pick: Battenwear’s Batten-Down Vest V2 in, you guessed it, Dark Brown.

Drawing inspiration from iconic American 1970s down vests, the Batten-Down Vest offers a contemporary reinterpretation of a timeless classic. Striking a perfect equilibrium between rugged outdoor aesthetics and urban sophistication, it delivers both style and robust warmth.

If you’re familiar with the Battenwear brand, you’ll know that its Batten-Down vest is a classic in its collection, year-on-year. However, this year we have version two, which the New York-based brand claims is a “level-up” from the previous iteration of its Batten-Down Vest. How? Battenwear has taken its design to new heights by collaborating with a renowned factory in Japan, which boasts a remarkable 130-year history specializing in crafting top-tier uniforms and blankets.

The factory employs a unique cleaning process, one which utilizes locally sourced mineral-rich waters to ensure the removal of impurities. Not only does this remove pollutants in a more sustainable manner, it also helps to make the down used to line the vest even fluffier. And who doesn’t like fluffier?

Available for $390 from Battenwear.

And there you have it: a modular, Fall-inspired fit that’ll have you looking like you just stepped off the set of an Aimé Leon Dore x Woolrich commercial.
