Wool Flannel Shirts – Five Plus One

Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.

The days are getting shorter and the weather is getting colder, and that’s the exact combination that makes me want to put on a warm flannel. And while there are an endless number of options, when I’m looking for the most warmth I also reach for one made of wool. We’ve put together a list of some of the best options on the market, and we hope it helps you fill that flannel-shaped hole in your wardrobe.

1) Schott: CPO Wool Shirt – Spruce Plaid

Schott might be known for its leather jackets, but it also makes formidable renditions of other garment types, such as the CPO Wool Shirt. It’s made from an ultra-heavyweight 20 oz. 50%/50% wool/poly blend fabric, and features mini-anchor buttons, two buttoned chest pockets, and a slightly curved hem to ensure you don’t try to tuck this shirt in.

Available for $155 from Stag Provisions.

2) Woolrich: Alaskan Wool Check Overshirt

Woolrich is one of the biggest names in wool flannels, so who would we be to not include them on this list? Their Alaskan Wool Check Overshirt really plays to my love of heavily textured fabrics, and the matched chest pockets just adds to this aesthetic. This 60%/35%/5% wool/polyester/nylon blend overshirt also features a light down fill, to ensure this shirt offers even more protection from the cold.

Available for $195 from End.

3) Buzz Rickson: Navy Wool Flannel CPO Shirt

I’m a sucker for historical repros, and Buzz Rickson’s version of the CPO Shirt is one of the nicest around. It’s made in Japan from 100% boiled wool flannel and comes jam-packed with great details such as all-cotton thread, custom-made twill backing, and chainstitch runoff.

Available for $285 from Self Edge.

4) Needles: Cowboy One-Up

Needles’ Cowboy One-Up is a really fun, western-inspired wool flannel shirt in a great colorway. As you’d expect from a western flannel, this shirt has the iconic rear yoke, snapped from closure, and a boxy fit. This shirt is made with a 67%/32%/1% wool/nylon/polyester blend fabric to ensure both warmth and durability.

Available for $432 from Blue in Green.

5) Freenote Cloth: Alta Olive

Freenote Cloth‘s Alta Olive is another excellent option if you want a wool flannel that has some a bit of lining for extra warmth. This shirt is made in the USA from a Japanese wool twill that features a 70%/30% wool/polyester blend, but with cotton lining at the sleeves and yoke. It’s finished with two chest pockets, two hand pockets, and Italian horn buttons.

Available for $225 from Freenote Cloth.

Plus One – Toogood: The Trawlerman Shirt

Wool-Flannel-Shirts---Five-Plus-One-The-Trawlerman-Shirt

Toogood‘s Trawlerman Shirt isn’t your everyday wool flannel. Made in Poland from a 100% wool, multi-colored flannel, this knee-length shirt is unlike just about anything else on the market. This shirt features an asymmetrical hem and a pointed collar, looking quite a bit like a vintage men’s nightshirt. While not the kinda shirt I’m gonna grab every time I’m a bit chilly, it’s definitely a fun piece if you’re into avant-garde pieces that still carry the quality construction of the classics.

Available for $1080 from Namu.
