Denim Trousers – Five Plus One

Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.

Despite the large number of selvedge trousers out there, the vast majority are either made from chambray or another non-denim twill. Those options can be great, but sometimes you want to put on a pair of chinos that are made of real and true denim.

If you want a pair of chinos that you can wear in a more formal way without having to forgo the fades, then this edition of Five Plus One should have some Denim Trousers that’ll tickle your fancy.

1) Ranger Overall: Loose Denim Trousers in 11.5 oz. Selvedge

Denim-Trousers---Five-Plus-One-Ranger-Overall

If you’re a fan of loose fittings pants but want to join the denim trousers gang, then Ranger Overall‘s accurately named Loose Denim Trousers might be just the pair for you. They’re made from a lightweight, 11.5 oz. selvedge denim with a wide leg, overlock stitched hem, and trouser-style outseam pockets, giving them a look far different from your usual jeans, chinos, or trousers.

Available for $121 from Olderbest.

2) Benzak Denim Developers: BC-01 Tapered Chino in 13.75 oz. Brushed Denim

Denim-Trousers---Five-Plus-One-Benzak-Denim-Developers

Benzak Denim Developers‘ BC-01 Tapered Chinos are on the tapered side of the fit spectrum, so deserve due consideration if you like slimmer pants.

They might not be selvedge, but they have a beautifully finished brushed denim fabric, chambray pocket bags, stainless steel buttons, and slash pockets. While I wouldn’t say these are as versatile as denim jeans or regular trousers, they’re an interesting way to add something a bit different to your rotation.

Available for €165 (~$180) from Benzak Denim Developers.

3) Rogue Territory: Officer Trousers 15 oz. in Stealth

Rogue Territory has made a ton of great trousers over the years, but we’re thrilled to see their Officer Trousers in this black/grey selvedge denim.

Made from RT’s sulfur-dyed ‘Stealth Selvedge’, you’re not going to get the same fades as with traditional indigo denim — these will develop a hazy, smokey grey patina with wear and washing . That said, these trousers are sleek, durable, and easy to work into nearly any casual wardrobe.

Available for $265 from Redcast Heritage.

4) Kaptain Sunshine: Denim Trouser in Indigo Vintage Wash

Denim-Trousers---Five-Plus-One-Kaptain-Sunshine

Kaptain Sunshine does a great job of devising unique, new styles with vintage-inspired flair, and their Denim Trouser is just one example of this. Based on 90s denim, these jeans have a wide, baggy fit with a pressed vertical crease, welt back pockets, and wide belt loops.

These trousers really bring me back to the clothing of my childhood, and while I’m not ready to relive these styles just yet I’m thrilled to see a company embracing them.

Available for $267 from Namu.

5) MotivMfg x Division Road: French Work Trousers in Charcoal Donegal Selvedge Denim

Denim-Trousers---Five-Plus-One-MotivMfg

MotivMfg and Division Road’s collaboration French Work Trousers are made from selvedge denim with a charcoal warp and grey/brown weft, but that’s not what sets them apart. The wide leg with a significant taper and the unique black/grey selvedge line is one of the most unique we’ve ever seen. They feature the rear patch pockets as you might normally expect on jeans, but the slash front pockets and pleats thrust them into the trouser category, with those offset belt loops adding even more design flair.

Available for $275 from Division Road.

Plus One – BEAMS+: 2 Pleats Denim Pant – Indigo

Denim-Trousers---Five-Plus-One-BEAMS+

There were a lot of sick denim trousers this week, but Beams Plus eked out the competition for that coveted Plus One spot. They feature an iconic pleated and cropped silhouette but use a denim fabric not typically seen in this kind of early 20th-century style.

In addition to the pleats and centre seam, they feature a flapped coin pocket, welt back pockets, and turned-up cuffs. Wear these pants casually with a vintage-style sweatshirt or pair them with your favorite blazer and an oxford shirt for a fun ivy ensemble.

Available for $194 from Stag Provisions.
