Spark Up Your Shirting with Jelado’s Ciggy Shirt

You have to appreciate the dedication to historical sources demonstrated by Japanese clothing brands. Most American companies would probably call this shirt something like “Half-zip popover,” or “Pullover work shirt.” But Jelado cites their sources by calling this chambray work shirt the ‘Ciggy’ Shirt.

This design is based on the ‘Gatchapoke’ pattern, which featured distinctive asymmetrical pockets specifically for stashing smokes. Inspiration came from the American workwear manufacturer Big Yank. During the 1920’s and 1930’s, the Chicago based brand came up with a number of functional clothing innovations that eventually became industry standards.

For fans of the brand, this 100% cotton chambray work shirt is an alteration of Jelado’s Smoker Shirt. You get the same triple stitch construction, chain stitch runoffs, throat tab, and – of course – two distinctive chest pockets. The fabric is a Japanese milled, twisted green chambray, which gives a deep texture that will develop more pronounced fades than standard chambray.

Even though the only change made from the original chambray work shirt was swapping out the button down front for a half zipper, it creates a noticeably different look and wear. It feels more like a poncho or smock, which works well as a top layer for transitional weather. Of course, chambray breathes better than most other cotton fabrics, so it is a great choice for spring and summer.
