I understand that this Plaid Tweed Coach Jacket from South2 West8 is technically a coach jacket, but it doesn’t have much in common with its ancestors. Like, it shares DNA and all that, but somewhere along the timeline it grew a beard, moved off the grid, got hyper-focused on wood-chopping technique, and started making its own jerky. (But not in an insufferable way. Like it doesn’t talk about chopping wood, it just has a lot of wood ready to go.)
And to be clear, it’s a welcome personal rebrand. Made in Japan from a dumb heavy 90/10 wool/nylon fabric and available in either a black or Bordeaux blown-out pattern, this beefed-up sideline staple features a full cupro lining, a standard point collar, a snap-button front, slanted patch pockets at the front, elastic cuffs and a cinched hem.
For anyone trying to find a winter coat suitable for named storms, this probably isn’t the one. But for anyone looking for a mid-weight option that’s begging to be layered—or maybe an alternative to a shearling-lined trucker—it doesn’t get much better.
