Calculus Welcomes orSlow

If I had my own retail space which I had to fill with brands that I felt would, firstly, appeal to my target audience, and secondly, provide a solid basis for curating a kick-ass store, at the top of my list would be orSlow. A foundational brand in the world of Japanese heritage wear, orSlow has been producing high-quality, military-inspired garments since the brand was founded in 2005, and it (thankfully) doesn’t look like Nakatsu-san will be slowing down anytime soon.

Thinking along the same lines as me is Canadian-based online retailer Calculus, which has just received its first orSlow delivery just in time for ss23. Here’s a quick rundown of some of my standout pieces.

First up, the ‘40s Coverall Jacket w/ Paint in ecru. Cut from a Japanese natural cotton twill, orSlow’s paint splatter coverall takes inspiration from classic American workwear. The lightweight, summertime-friendly jacket features a single chest pocket, two lower hand pockets, metal doughnut buttons, and a random, Margiela-inspired paint splatter pattern on the front of the garment, helping to really sell the story that you are indeed the next Leonardo Davinci.

Next, orSlow’s ‘60s Bleached Chambray work shirt. Chambray shirts are a dime a dozen nowadays, but good or even great chambray shirts are relatively hard to come by, especially if you don’t know where to look. Aside from Buzz Rickson’s, another Japanese stalwart and chambray shirt savant, orSlow is the place to be. They’re like the Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier of the chambray shirt world, except nobody lost. Cut with a relaxed fit from a 5 oz. chambray, the shirt features two chest pockets, a regular collar, and a slightly curved hem for ease of wear. If you’re lacking a shirt this summer, chambray is the way.

Lastly, I couldn’t not throw in a pair of pants, right? orSlow’s Vintage Fit Army Trousers in ivory are trousers of summer. Cut from a 13 oz. sateen twill, the pants feature a high-rise, a coin pocket, two rear welt pockets, and a drapey, easy-to-wear straight-leg fit. If you’re stuck on either the slim fit or blue denim-only hype train, I urge you to get off at the next stop. Although it might be a shock to the system at first, ivory, straight-fit pants are the way to go in the warmer months.

Put these things all together and you’ve got yourself a summer fit, ladies and gentlemen. Finish the look with a white tee under the chambray shirt and a pair of Bostons and you’re good to go.
