The Heddels Overshirt Guide 2022

As we snap into fall, it’s time to talk overshirts. Perhaps the quintessential fall garment, the overshirt is your best bud when the temperature drops and will still be by your side through the depths of winter. Easy to layer over or under, take on and off, and good lookin’ with almost any clothing combo, it’s a no-brainer to invest in a high-quality overshirt or two that you’ll use for many years to come.

A category too broad and too important to whittle down to just six pieces in our Five Plus One format, we’ve put together a list of what we think are the best overshirts on the market this season, breaking them down into three categories — straight hem, round hem, and under $200. We’ve also featured a range of fabrics to ensure that readers in different climates are covered, so, make yourself a coffee and prepare to pour over a list of the best overshirts in the game.

Straight Hem

ts(s) Mixed Color Cotton Round Flap Pocket Baggy Shirt

The-Heddels-Overshirt-Guide-2022 Available for $295 from Namu Shop

Kicking off our selection of straight-hemmed overshirts is the Mixed Color Cotton Round Flap Pocket Baggy Shirt from ts(s). That’s a mouthful, for sure, but as usual with ts(s), this overshirt is a piece of understated glory. Buttonless flap pockets are a lesser-seen pocket type on shirting and usually reserved for jackets, but they really set this otherwise simple piece off, which is made from a 100% cotton medium-weight twill that looks to have been brushed for texture.

The Round Flap Baggy Shirt comes in two colorways — gray and khaki — both finished with a short point collar, adjustable cuffs, shell buttons, and spit hem. Dress this one up with a fine knit sweater underneath and some formal trousers, or go completely casual with the same kind of styling exhibited by Namu above.

Benzak Denim Developers BWS-03 Military Overshirt

The-Heddels-Overshirt-Guide-2022-BWS-03-11-oz.-Indigo-x-Indigo-twill,-available-for-$235-from-Division-Road

Benzak‘s BWS-03 Military Overshirt in 11oz Indigo x Indigo Herringbone Twill is one of the more classic naval style overshirts you’ll find on this list. When we think of overshirts in the American heritage vein, the USN Officer’s shirt comes to mind, and this one’s a great example. It’s pretty close to a true reproduction, but it’s obviously updated in fit, fabric, and details to suit the modern (hoodie-wearing) soldier’s needs.

With a nice light 11oz. Collect Mills double indigo Herringbone Twill fabric, the Military Overshirt comes equipped with Mil-spec melamine buttons throughout, two roomy chest pockets (wouldn’t be an Officer’s shirt without ’em), adjustable cuffs, and tonal Benzak longhorn bull logo embroidery.

BWS-03 11 oz. Indigo x Indigo twill, available for $235 from Division Road

Corridor NYC Rainbow Weave Overshirt

Corridor NYC‘s Rainbow Weave Overshirt in Forest is one of the more fun, but still completely wearable, overshirts from F/W22. If you’re looking for a functional workwear style with a little more oomph, the colorful and highly textured Rainbow Weave is smart from afar and smile-inducing when up close. Throw it on directly after a spell of rain and sun to match your surroundings.

Woven in India and sewn up in Corridor’s partner facility in the same country, the Overshirt is as simple as it gets: Classic French workwear style 3-pocket chore coat design, button-closing front placket, and button-adjusting cuffs.

Portuguese Flannel Wool Donegal Overshirt

The-Heddels-Overshirt-Guide-2022-Available-for-$295-($250.75-for-Heddels+-members)-from-Stag-Provisions

The Wool Donegal Overshirt in Gray is the heavy and warming Overshirt made by Portuguese Flannel that’s sure to hit the spot come December. A wool overshirt is the casual alternative to a more obtrusive and heavy-duty pea coat — an undoubtedly nice to have — but layers are king. This versatile piece is gonna go with just about anything you can throw at it, because textured wool pairs with pretty much everything, making this a stellar option to pair with all the indigo-hued clothes you’ve got in the closet.

The Donegal is 100% virgin wool, and comes with two button-closing flap chest pockets, button-front placket, button-adjusting cuffs, and is fully lined with Rayon. I’m getting warm just thinking about this one.

Available for $295 from Stag Provisions

Knickerbocker NYC Corduroy Pines Shirt

The-Heddels-Overshirt-Guide-2022-Available-for-$295-($250.75-for-Heddels+-members)-from-Knickerbocker-NYC

The Knickerbocker NYC Corduroy Pines Shirt is a modern take on the overshirt, one that we can’t help but want to dress up as much as possible. The smartly placed oversized square-shaped pockets on the chest make for a nice break from your typical Officer’s style shirt, but that doesn’t mean the Pines Shirt can’t be worn just the same, it’s still a versatile piece of outerwear.

Cut from an Italian-milled eight-wale corduroy in two colorways, the shirt can definitely be comfortably worn among the Pines, ’cause corduroy is insulating as hell. Details include a wide-seamed button-closing front placket, button-closing flap pockets, adjustable cuffs, and tonal Knickerbocker embroidery on the front.

Available for $295 from Knickerbocker NYC

The-Heddels-Overshirt-Guide-2022-Available-for-$410-from-Franklin-&-Poe

The-Heddels-Overshirt-Guide-2022-Available-from-Lost-&-Found-for-$493

Like most of Engineered Garments‘ cold weather garb, the Explorer Shirt Jacket in 8W Corduroy is a little extra. Extra pockets, extra details, extra fit, extra fabric. — which really does fit the potential needs of an explorer, even if your exploring does from your crib to the deli, the park, and back. Schott CPO Wool Shirt

The-Heddels-Overshirt-Guide-2022-Available-for-$125-from-Stag-Provisions

Did you know that the Leather Jacket professionals over at Schott NYC also make shirting? They’ve been making their CPO since the early 20th century and it’s as good as ever. They’re no frills and wallet-friendly, but pack just as much of a punch as overshirts double the price.

Made from a 20 oz. heavyweight wool/poly blend, this is a truly solid basic that you won’t regret sizing up on and throwing on over all your fine button-ups or knits (even the one that cost more than this outer layer). Two flap chest pockets, solid buttons to bundle up with, adjustable cuffs (fold that cuff and show off that thermal you’ve got layered under a la McQueen), and like a true USN CPO, they’re cut from a heavy wool blend that’s available in a slew of colors.

Benzak Denim Developers BWS-03 Military Overshirt

The-Heddels-Overshirt-Guide-2022-BWS-03-10-oz.-Sand-military-Twill,-available-for-€164,46-($160USD)-from-Benzak-Denim-Developers

The second BDD piece we’ve got on this list, the BWS-03 Military Overshirt, is the same as its indigo-drenched counterpart you read about above – but housed in a lightweight Sand military Twill fabric. Just ’cause it’s a military-style repro shirt doesn’t mean it’s got to be cut from those mid-century style fabrics and colorways. A lightweight, fun color like sand means you can switch it up, without sacrificing straightforward functionality and ease of wear.

BWS-03 10 oz. Sand military Twill, available for €164,46 (~$160USD) from Benzak Denim Developers

Universal Works Bakers Overshirt

The-Heddels-Overshirt-Guide-2022-Available-for-$155-($131.75-for-Heddels+-members)-from-Stag-Provisions

From British mainstay, Universal Works, comes the Bakers Overshirt, a 3-pocket chore coat style with a twist. Hint: it has 4 pockets. That fourth pocket is comfortably nestled in the left-side hip pocket, no one will know other than you and your AirPods.

This rendition of the Bakers Overshirt is done up in a lightweight fine wale corduroy, but just because it’s light, doesn’t mean it’s not gonna keep you warm when you’re using it as your outermost top layer. Corduroy’s hot, literally, and we like how Universal Works washed out this black slightly to make it less intense.

The Bakers Overshirt is made in Portugal andcomes with a buttoning front placket, spread collar, and a regular fit (go true to size)

Joe & Co. Paxton 2 Overshirt

The-Heddels-Overshirt-Guide-2022-Available-for-$150-from-Joe-&-Co.

The Joe & Co. Paxton 2 Overshirt is an overshirt for the indigo lovers out there. That raw unsanforized 10 oz. denim is sure to fade to a more vivid hue of gold-rush blue once you’ve broken it in and washed it down. If you haven’t clicked through to see the printed indigo chambray that lines the cuffs and collar, please do, and then CC this shirt to the denim freak in your life or put it on your Christmas list.

At first glance, the Paxton 2 Overshirt is pretty straightforward, and then you see the accents of red buttons and red button-holes, and a red tag at the side seam. Made in Manchester, details on the Paxton 2 include two button-closing flap chest pockets, corozo nut buttons, and a flap pocket on the left sleeve and towards the rear hem.

Available for $150 from Joe & Co.

Buzz Rickson’s CPO

The-Heddels-Overshirt-Guide-2022-Available-for-$185-from-Hinoya

The Buzz Rickson’s CPO is a true US Naval Officer’s shirt reproduction, from the navy 100% wool flannel fabric to the mil-spec urea anchor buttons. It’s legit. Your great grandpa might think you pilfered it from out of his old Uniform stash. If he does, just get him on the Hinoya webstore and watch his eyes light up.

One button-closing flap chest pocket on the front means you’ll be carrying a bit less in this overshirt, but that’s why you’re wearing it over your chambray, or your mil-spec athletic wear sweatshirt. You really gotta cuff this shirt, leave it unbuttoned, and show off your colorful underlayers to get that full casual overshirt effect.

Made in Japan and available for $185 from Hinoya.
