Fade Friday – Pure Blue Japan XX-015 (4 Years, 2 Washes, 5 Soaks)

When we see Pure Blue Japan in our fades inbox, we know the chances of the submission containing some top-drawer fades are pretty high. The brand’s penchant for slubby, neppy, and rough-textured raw selvedge denim leads to jeans with some super interesting wear patterns, just like this pair of XX-015s from our guy Colton over in Canada.

Slim taper jeans will always fade quicker and harder than their wider counterparts, and these drainpipes look as though they were yanked off Joey Ramone back in ’79. Colton has been rocking these jeans since 2017, putting them through their paces with cycling, farming, longboarding, and even some mechanic work. The result is a nicely faded pair of jeans, completely unique to their wearer and full of battle scars from their journey.

The faded lap is sprinkled with some shimmering whiskers, with the knees following suit. Flip ’em over and your eyes are immediately drawn to those tightly stacked honeycombs, which are so charmingly typical of a pair of slim-fitting raw denim jeans. But whilst the standard raw-denim evolution hallmarks are great ‘n’ all, it’s the little chinks in this set of indigo armor that make them special. The left knee got scuffed while Colton was longboarding in Vancouver and was later repaired by Dutil Denim in Toronto, and the right rear pocket was nearly lost while Colton crawled around under his car whilst conducting an oil change. Any discounts for Heddels staff in need of a mechanic, Colton?

This loyal PBJ fan has stated he will never retire these beloved XX-015s, but has admitted that he has started breaking in another pair. We hope to see a fade submission of those in the near future.
