Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.
Short-sleeved linen shirts are a great way to stay cool, especially with the weather being so, well, weather-y these days. While we’ve talked about a myriad of short-sleeved shirts and linen garments this season, the pièce de résistance of short-sleeved linen shirts has somehow eluded us this season — and that’s something we’re set on rectifying!
While you can’t walk into a nice clothing store without finding linen shirts, we’ve done our best to cover a good range of Heddels-worthy S/S linen button-downs
1) Knickerbocker: Cotton & Linen Robie Shirt – Brown
Knickerbocker‘s Cotton & Linen Robie Shirt is an excellent option if you’re looking for a neutrally colored short-sleeved linen shirt. That said, this piece does have some features to set it apart from the competition. With just four buttons on the front placket and a wide collar, this shirt definitely has a bit more of a casual look. It’s also made from a 55%/45% cotton/linen blend which gives you the best of both worlds: the feel of cotton with the breathability of linen.
Available for $195 from Franklin & Poe.
2) NN07: Julio 5706 Convertible-Collar Linen Shirt
NN07‘s Julio Convertible-Collar Linen Shirt covers a lot of bases and does a good job of summarizing what we’re seeing from linen shirts this season. That is to say, it features a boxy fit with larger armholes and sleeve circumference than a standard s/s, and a slight taper from shoulders to waist. It’s available in a ton of colors, and at its mid price point is a great entry into the world of linen shirts.
Available for $155 from Mr. Porter.
3) Schnayderman’s: Shirt Oversized SS Linen Check Red/Navy/Cream
Schnayderman‘s Oversized SS Linen Shirt is another great example of the oversized, boxy linen shirts we’re seeing all over the place this season. It’s made from 100% linen and features a tight, check pattern with a stealthy pattern-matched chest pocket. Finished with a curved hem and seven-button placket, this shirt is as unique as the Knickerbocker shirt above, but for the exact opposite reason.
Available for $149 from Lost & Found.
4) American Trench: Cotton Linen Camp Collar Shirt
If you’re looking for upgraded basics made in the USA, look no further than American Trench. Their Cotton Linen Camp Collar Shirt is incredibly well priced, made from a 50%/50% cotton/linen blend fabric, and features a classic pocketed/camp collared pattern. Available in three neutral colors, this is a really easy shirt to fit into just about any wardrobe.
Available for $115 from American Trench.
5) Blluemade: Spread Collar Shirt – Celadon Belgian Linen
Blluemade‘s Spread Collar Shirt is an awesome choice if you find yourself donning linen on the regular, and want a top-tier linen S/S to add to your collection. It’s made in NYC from 100% Belgian linen fabric which has a beautiful, lustrous texture to it. The spread collar stays open more than most, which creates a unique look, especially with the troca shell buttons.
While certainly not a cheap shirt, this is a masterfully crafted linen shirt in a gorgeous colorway.
Available for $242 from Franklin & Poe.
Plus One – Sefr: Mate Shirt in Red Linen
Not all short-sleeved linen shirts are button-downs, and Sefr‘s Mate Shirt comes sans-placket.
Made from a heavyweight, knitted Italian linen fabric this shirt has an open skipper-style collar without those pesky buttons — just chest hair and good vibes. While this is definitely a unique piece, it’s a fantastic way to break the monotony of the regular spring/summer shirting with an iconic silhouette rooted in resort wear.
Available for $168 from Vestis.
