High Neck Sweatshirts – Five Plus One

Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.

There are few things more comfortable than a good sweatshirt, but sometimes you just want something a bit different. Crewnecks and hoodies can be old hat, and so comes the rise of the high-neck sweatshirt. While we can’t promise this will be your next favorite style, if you like the look of these sweatshirts it’s a great way to add some variety to your selection of sweatwear.

1) Kapital: Reverse Fleece Big High Neck Sweatshirt – Ecru

High-Neck-Sweatshirts---Five-Plus-One-Kapital

Kapital‘s Reverse Fleece High Neck is perfect if you want something baggy, comfy, and with tons of added warmth around your neck. Made in Japan from a 75%/25% polyester/rayon blend, this isn’t your standard vintage-inspired sweatshirt fabric. It’s Kapital, after all – they don’t really do standard.

Finished with two zippered hand pockets this sweatshirt fits the bill for cuddling up on the couch, braving the dregs of winter, or simply adding a bit of flair to your fit.

Available for $310 from Stag Provisions.

2) A.G. Spalding & Bros: Turtle Neck Training Sweatshirt Oatmeal

High-Neck-Sweatshirts---Five-Plus-One-A.G.-Spalding-&-Bros

A.G. Spalding & Bros’ take on this style comes in the form of their Turtle Neck Training sweatshirt, which is a lot more refined than many other sweatshirts on this list. With the body of a vintage sweatshirt and a traditional turtleneck, this is clearly a reproduction of a lesser-made early Spalding piece and we’re here for it.

Each piece is made in Japan from loopwheeled cotton fleece and comes finished with two mitten-shaped pockets and ornate ribbed cuffs.

Available for $290 from Clutch Cafe.

3) Far Afield: Funnel Neck Sweatshirt

High-Neck-Sweatshirts---Five-Plus-One-Far-Afield

Far Afield‘s Funnel Neck Sweatshirt is another excellent option in the high-neck sweatshirt games. It’s a pretty affordable option in this category despite featuring its unique yet well-executed style and YKK zipper. It’s finished with two hand pockets, making it a great layering piece when you need just a little something extra. You could also wear this over a shirt in the office with no complaints.

Available for $112 from Revolvr.

4) ts(s): Back Brushed High Neck Sweatshirt

High-Neck-Sweatshirts---Five-Plus-One-ts(s)

ts(s)‘s Back Brushed High Neck Sweatshirt is another fun option, featuring a 62%/35%/3% polyester/cotton/polyurethane that results in a soft, brushed interior. This Japan-made sweatshirt has a very dialed in, wide, high neck collar that adds a lot of warmth and interest to this piece without feeling over the top, which is a problem for many attempts at this style. It comes in several colors and is finished with seam hand pockets for a little hidden storage.

Available for $159 from Namu.

5) Still by Hand: High Neck Sweatshirt

High-Neck-Sweatshirts---Five-Plus-One-Still-by-Hand

Still by Hand has some unique pieces, but their High Neck Sweatshirt is a true standout. Made in Japan from a heavyweight cotton fleece, this sweatshirt has a high-sitting ribbed turtleneck with matching ribbing at the cuffs and hem. It’s loose-fitting with saddle shoulder sleeves and features a tall kangaroo pocket at the front.

While I can’t say this is the kind of sweatshirt I’d reach for as a daily driver, it’s an incredibly nice piece that would be easy to work into most wardrobes.

Available for ~$146 from Blue Button Shop.

Plus One – Fil Melange: Stand Neck Sweatshirt

High-Neck-Sweatshirts---Five-Plus-One-Fil-Melange

There were a ton of interesting sweatshirts to choose from this week, but Fil Melange‘s Stand Neck Sweatshirt just eeked out the competition. This is a vintage-inspired sweatshirt both in terms of the fabric and the fit, but the inclusion of a standup, drawstring collar is the true masterstroke. While I know this isn’t the piece for everyone, it’s an amazing sweatshirt that is both daring and well-executed, and that’s exactly the kind of piece we’ll always be thrilled to feature.

Available for $164 from Sun House.
