Khadi has made some inroads into western denim with companies like Seven Senses offering selvege khadi fabric wholesale.

Snazzy finished products often get the glory, but just like an exceptional meal, the jackets, jeans, and boots that we all love to ogle start with exceptional materials. One such manufacturer is Seven Senses, an Amsterdam-based company that manages the entire supply chain and manufacturing process to create responsibly handmade fabrics.

Hand-spun, hand-woven, and hand-dyed, Seven Senses’ Khadi denim has tons of character. Left Field has even used Khadi denim in the past. Seven Senses selvedge often includes gold and silver zari (the metallic thread often used in brocade on saris) as a nod to their own heritage being woven into the diverse end uses of their material.

Shown here is their latest lookbook, with an emphasis on the progressive, fashion-forward side of their business. The Seven Senses website also provides more details on the behind-the-scenes process and the heritage of their methods. Fun fact: Khadi fabric was central to Ghandi’s efforts to empower Indian economic and social traditions.

Expect to see these fabrics in the coming season from home sewers and niche brands alike. Check out the Seven Senses’ website for more.
