Benzak Denim Developers Launches New Crowdfunder

We introduced you to Benzak Denim Developers (BDD) a couple of years ago. Based in Amsterdam, Holland, the one-man brand is operated by Lennaert Nijgh, who finishes every pair of his six-pocket denim by hand.

Nijgh launched the first production run with a successful crowd-funding campaign last year, and he is now launching a Kickstarter campaign to help fund his second run. Along with the two styles we have seen from BDD, Nijgh is introducing two new styles: a dark-tone denim–which features indigo-dyed warp and weft–and a grey-cast.

Although we have expressed our mixed feelings on crowd-funding campaigns, as well as our possible reconciliation with the idea in the past, we feel Nijgh is relying on crowd-funding for solid reasons. He believes that direct funding maintains the independence of the brand by alleviating the anxiety of worrying about financial backers, allowing him to maintain creative control and take risks necessary to move forward in developing a unique product.

The initial funding goal is 5,000 euros, but if the project hits 20k BDD will release a special-edition jean. For a full run-down on all of the rewards for backers, as well as descriptions of the various products, check out the Kickstarter before it ends on August 19.
