Mid-June, and what I like to call “splay season” is in full effect. What better way to kick this off than with an absolute beauty of a shirt from legendary Japanese purveyors of all things indigo, Samurai. These SOS22-S03 Natural Indigo Ichimatsu Shirts, although difficult to pronounce, are definitely easy on the eye.
Taking inspiration from the classic, splayed, camp collar shirts donned by all the cool guys in the 50s, these button-downs are made in Japan and cut from a choice of two natural indigo Kasuri hand-dyed broken twill fabrics. This dyeing method is responsible for the intricate pattern throughout, as the yarns are bound or resist-dyed before the process starts. The yarn is then tied so the dye doesn’t soak in and those segments remain white after the dye is completed creating the “Ichimatsu” (checkerboard) pattern after it’s woven.
A relaxed cut that features triple-needle stitched construction and is finished with metal buttons – these are not ones to be overlooked as applicants for your summer rotation.
